Why do people spend more time cycling than running?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Before padded running shoes, there were heel strikers. I'm not saying it's good or bad though. Would you like me to dig up some examples?

I seem to enjoy the scenery while I am rolling. If I do that on foot, I might trip.

This all very nice.
Nevertheless ... if those guys would have had bikes they could have hunted better and would have survived even more.
As I said some pages ago and is now proven by science: running is for cavemen

I run strongest after I get off the bike.

Maybe I'm finally a triathlete.

The only reason you have an arch in your foot is to absorb shock from running
The arch actually plays quite a role in energy conservation in running and walking. The calves also exist for reasons other than absorbing shock from running. Eccentrically, this what they do. Concentrically, they return stored energy and plantar flex the foot during toe-off.

The argument that "no other species has an arch..." is null. It's also true no other species is bipedal to the same extent as humans. It's kind of stupid to compare such different gaits.

I actually don't have arches in my feet. (And I've never weighed over 145 either). In fact, when I got orthotics the podiatrist remarked that my feet were perfectly flat without even standing on them.

I guess I'm a different species then...

My advice is to HTFU and cycle harder!
Try to keep your speed over 25mph all the time ... get out of the saddle on hills and pound the pedals like there's no tomorrow ... keep pounding 'em when going down to descend even faster and after about half an hour, depending on your fitness level, you'll be completely wasted like if you were running.
Cycling gives people the option to coast and rest once in a while but that doesn't mean you have to.
I was thinking about this during a recent walk around a small reservoir and getting buzzed by a couple fast riders doing laps --

Riding hard is easy enough if the location is good. Few walkers/joggers, big-radius turns, no blind corners, wide pavement... Where we were walking had none of these things, and trying to ride fast looked WAY too risky.

I've found areas where I could just plug in and do 20+ mph, but that wasn't one of them.

When running, though, it's easier to find spaces where it's safe to run harder. I'll give running this point.

I'll be in Savannah working for the next 2 months. Looking forward to the change from the roller coaster terrain 'round these parts. It'll be nice to maintain a spirited pace for miles on end.

Riding hard for long is tricky though
Obviously you need to find a good clean stretch of road or a safe environment to do this.
