Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

mavic carbone sl powertap???

I want to build a pt with a carbone sl, is this a good idea? i know mavic sell them already laced to pt. however i was told that it might be flexy since it is only 20h, i am planning to use a heavier stronger spoke with brass nipples. i was also told with a carbone sl, i cant lace 2x on the drive side for clearance issues, is this true?

Does anyone know what stock aero spokes are used for the wheel set? I was leaning towards building up the rear wheel with dt swiss competition to add stiffness. Will using competition spokes make that much of a difference in stiffness or should I just stick with the aero spoke? I weigh 170lbs, I just want to make sure the rear 20 spoke 2x non drive/radial drive side laced with the powertap will be stiff enough.

On the other hand, I noticed that mavic offers the carbone sl already paired with a pt. How come they use the 2.4 version and not the SL pt version? I read that the 2.4 version that mavic is using is able to use ant+, is this true?

thnx

Is this what you're looking at?

If it is it seems like a good deal, if you're willing to ride tubulars.

They are said to be fantastic wheels, underrated. I would not go tubular just because those are on sale. Tubular tires are expensive, the price difference will not be worth it once you've worn the rims. If you descend a lot and not on pristine roads I'd go for aluminum braking tracts. Less work and less expensive.

yep, i am talking about the SL alum version. i know that the stock SL's are a solid wheelset but i am concerned about it being built up with a 20h pt radial laced drive side. can anyone give some feed back on how the ride is with thept?

I also noticed that the pt that mavic uses is the 2.4 one (i saw a pic on mavics site) does anyone know if th works with ant+

I think you're right to be concerned about the pre-built Mavic wheel. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. 20 spokes, radial DS, 1 cross NDS. The lacing doesn't meet PowerTap recommendations at all.

The Cosmic Carbone is an aluminum rim with a carbon fairing -- the aluminum rim seats the nipples, not the fairing, which limits you to spoke lacing that is compatible with the holes drilled in the fairing. It also means you have to tension/true through the rim, which I find to be a major inconvenience when building and even worse if something needs to be touched post-build.

The pre-built wheel goes for about $1700 new. You could build a previous gen Zipp 404 clincher ($750) with a PT SL+ ($1032) and DT Comp spokes (~$30) with a reliable 2-cross lacing on both sides for just a little more than that. You can save $300 on that by getting a PowerTap Pro+ instead of the SL+.

(For the PowerTap prices, use universalcycles.com and coupon code VIP15).

Good luck!
