Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They are great in the winter, also like them in light to moderate rain. Had a recent experience where i ended up going through a deluge in 40 degree weather, felt like my feet were sloshing around in a swimming pool but at least they they were warm. Maybe a drain hole or two would help though this opens another can of worms during really cold weather. Really I should not have included them for as far as engineering goes, they are excellent. Forgive me Father for I have sinned.

Mavic MA-3. This unworthy and dumbed-down successor to the MA-2 became so notorious for cracks around the eyelets that Mavic had to rename the product "Open Sport". Hopefully they beefed up the rim a bit at the same time.

I must be getting old.

The first thing that came to my mind was the old safety/suicide brake levers.

Those qualify. They never worked right.

But yes, you are getting old if you remember them. I do.

For retro fails, there's the infamous Lambert/Viscount "death fork".

With the shifters right there on the handlebar at the stem.

Yeah, seems like I saw that in a museum or something.

There was also the first attempt at electronic shifting in the early 90's the Mavic Zap.

Never worked right, they pulled it after a couple of years. I knew a couple of local bike shop guys that actually had this stuff on their bikes.

i nominate crappy bontrager inner tubes and equally bad tires. trek should stick with making bikes, not rubber products.

Front derailleur mount on 2008 Felt F4C only held on by two rivets. Mine broke twice before Felt decided to upgrade to three rivets. Why is it called braze-on anyway when it is riveted on?

So when are you going to post photos of the D12 on the Cervelo?

I have a R3 SL so your rationalization for D12 won't work for me.

Galoshes/gumboot/wellington boots work well.

Have to use platform pedals, though.

I was at Performance the other day, and I overheard the salesman talking to a clueless newbie cyclist about their shorts, and the sales guy said "Oh, I really like the Gel Shorts."

It's pretty rare that I interrupt a conversation that I am not part of, but I could not hold my tongue...I suggested that IMO riding with a performance gel chamois is like riding with a wet, loaded diaper. I hope they forgive me for being so intrusive but at least my conscience is clear and I could sleep that night.

At least 10% of the Specialized 700c inner tubes I buy have defective presta valves.

I wonder if they're all like this?

Awhile back in C&V there was 'death bike' thread. The objective was to build the most dangerous bike possible, parts inluded the AVA death stem, Viscount death fork, Campagnolo NR/SR cranks etc....

I'd have to vote for anything that requires me to get a new tool. Freewheels/cassettes and Bottom brackets are the worst offenders.
