Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hot weather

Hi folks - question about riding in hot weather.

Was about 95* yesterday afternoon. Went out for a ride, running around 15 - 18 mph. Drinking LOTS of water - 2 qts in 20 mi. Had a couple of Enduralite caps pre ride.

At around mile 20, stopped sweating like a pig and got chills.
Not light headed, didn't seem to effect ability to put down power.

But freeked me out. Called it a day. Recovery seemed "normal".

So, what did I do to myself? Any opinions ?

Thanks

Same thing happened to me.

Live out by Canal Winchester and did a 30 mile ride Monday afternoon and started getting chills a bit but I think it was just mental. I will tell you that one frozen gatorade and one water was not enough to drink on a 93 degree day when we haven't acclimated to the heat yet.

ok?

I rode yesterday at 3pm. 30 miles, it was 103, I drank when I was thirsty.

How cliche would it be to tell you to HTFU?

That happened to me in Marine Corps bootcamp and I damn near passed out. We had just finished a hard PT and were getting "inspected", i.e. standing at attention in our shorts and shower shoes for half an hour until an officer came on deck.

I started getting chills and sweating like a pig. My shorts were soaked through. Then my vision started getting blurry and the room started spinning. The guys across from me said I went white as a sheet.

My drill instructor saw me about to pass out and screamed in my face to lock my legs out

...yeah, no real point here, carry on. HTFU. Don't lock your legs out. Have fun.

I will tell you, I have been in Scottsdale when it is in the 100's and I will tell you for a fact that while hot, riding in the 90's when humid is much worse in my opinion.

Riding anything above 70 degrees with an 80%+ humidity index is terrible for me.

your body and mind will adjust to the heat the more you ride in it

His problem is that here in Ohio it went from the 60's to the 90's in less than a week and there hasn't been that much time to acclimate yet.

Your body is just not acclimated to the higher temps yet. Good move to cut your ride short and not push further. Since our temps are frequently high with high humidity, most can adjust, some do bonk that don't deal with the higher temps well.

Take a rectal thermometer with you on your next ride and report back with your internal core temperature.

The heat doesn't seem to affect me too much until it get's over 100. I do get the chills like you mentioned, usually after a hard climb/effort when I ease off at the top of the hill or coming to a stop. It's a little disconcerting to get the chills when it's over 100, but I don't really get any other symptoms.

Humid days can suck also and I can drink up to 2 bottles an hour and still drop over 5 lbs of water weight during a ride on a really muggy day.

LOL I'll get back to you on that

As Jive Turkey said, we went from 60's to 90's in a couple of days, just takes longer to acclimate the older I get (50's).

Just was wierd - felt fine, bangin out ~200 watts, just cold with goose bumps !

Thanks for the replies

One thing that you can do off the bike is not live in AC constantly. If you aren't going to be inconvenienced by sweating a bit don't turn on the AC in your car sometimes and drive with the windows down. Mow your yard during a hotter part of the day. Things like that. I started a ride last year at 3:30 pm on an august day where the high was 106 and storm moving in so the humidity was terrible. We put in a pretty hard 52 mile ride on really hilly roads. 4 bottles of water, 2 gatorades, and a V8. It can be done you just have to used to it.

Good call on stopping. We have had a half dozen incidents in the past two years dealing with heat and sports. One kid died during football practice, heat can be a serious thing. It's all about good hydration and what your used too.

Thanks all, thought I was acclimated to the weather - I don't use A/C in the car but the GF runs the A/C in the house, outside all day Saturday cutting grass and other yard work - but hey, 95 is freaking 95 !

I know how to HTFU, I did back to back centuries mid May on maybe 150 miles training - and yes it HURT ! LOL

Hydration was good, I think electrolytes were good, but lack of miles this spring and the huge temp change bit me in the a$$.

Just a heads up to me that I wanted to pass on - yea we are tough, gnarley roadies - but if something dosn't feel right - ....... somethings probably wrong.
