Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are you sure you're allowed to move your whole head? Though my position makes me unqualified to make judgments on such matters, I thought you could only slightly raise up to 2 fingers while your hands and gaze remain fixed -- and even that is pushing it.

Head movement in non racing situations should be reserved for giving "the look."

Agreed on the uni cyclists. Not only are they too damn friendly, but some even act like they could learn something useful from Freds which is beyond nuts.

There is a Fred hierarchy, but the rules defining it are as numerous and strange as Fred equipment choices. I suspect that the guy on the touring rig is one those academics who has always been sympathetic to Road Nazism. Damn intellectuals.

Ah. Besides, I only nodded to people who nodded to me first.

Other than that, it's a one finger wave.

Cool story, bro.

I had a similar, but shorter encounter on the way home yesterday. Passed a guy on the trail; he was hanging out on a park bench with his bike. When I stopped to take this pic,

He rolled by. I got back on my bike and caught up to him; we got off the trail at the same spot. I followed him a bit but he seemed a bit slower than I was going so I went on past. He seemed to take it as a challenge and followed me for a couple miles through the neighborhoods until he finally turned and I went straight.

I thought the rules of engagement only permit acknowledging other Road Nazis that you've encountered before...

He waved? To a commuter?

I commute and always keep my foam finger handy, especially for the roadies.

There's a very popular loop with some climbing that dumps out on the highway so I see them on the flip side. Also, there are a few TT riders that go up and down the length because there almost 20 miles of straight road with no lights or signs to slow you down.

Roadies around my area are friendly (and I'm a cotton-cargo pants, thrift store wool turtle neck sweater, with matching wool cap wearing, on a black steel bike kind of Fred). Near our base is a caldera lake with a 27 mile loop around the crater, and a 2,500 feet climb on one side. It is one of the most beautiful spots I have ever ridden.

So, while eating my PBJ sandwich at the top of the hill here comes this nice guy from base, fully dressed for the occasion, riding his carbon fiber lady. This is early in the season. I took this snap that day:

So we chat, he's a he congratulates me for putting the effort, looks at my bike and comments on the weight and now easier it would be if I had a lighter beast. I say something about where I would put my PBJs and stuff I buy while on the road. Shortly after that his support van arrives, nice wife and a girl.

I clean up the PBJ mess and tell him I better get going because I still have a long way to go. He ask where I parked the car and I say 'At home'. At first I don't think he even believed me because his 27-mile climbing trip was part of my 90-mile round trip climb to the lake, around, and back. I'm sure his doubts were put to rest when two hours later on the way back home i saw the van drive by

I don't initiate contact. I only nod or finger wave when nodded or fingered waved to.

Heck no. Nodding is what you do to dislodge that drip of sweat off the brim of your helmet.

More to the point though...Typically, a Fred is someone who doesn't care what others think of his/her ride. He/she is function over form. To some extent we are all "Freds" some are more Fredly than others. I am a Fred when it comes to my choice of shirts, but that is because jerseys are pretty damn expensive.
well that's not entirely true. there seems to be multiple definitions of the word "Fred," but in common vernacular most people refer to fred as someone who is more or less a "newbie" but has lots of expensive equipment or bikes. IE, rich people who jump into this hobby and think they are hot sh*t but really don't know anything.

Those are posers. That condition may last well past the newbie stage.

Trust us on this one. Your description doesn't fit what we know of banerjak and he is almost exactly how I imagine a fred. Needs a beard and an aero-belly though.

Sounds to me we would all benefit from a chart much like the Evolution/Ascent of Man so we can all be clear on just how Fredly we are.
