Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Apex shifting ?

riding the other day on my new bike and as I shifted to the big ring I kicked the chain off the crank side of the ring... does the FD need to be adjusted? or was this user error by pushing it to far??

also, on the RD, it seems to hunt a little between gears around cogs 4-5-6, sometimes will bounce between one or two for some reason... fine at the extremes (1-2-3 and 8-9-10) but seems like its lost a little in the middle... is there a quick adjust to make to fix this?

Sounds like the cables stretched a little too much. Take it back to the store and have them show you how to adjust it.

Adjust your limit screws for the front. Adjust the B screw and tension for the rear.

a good idea if the PB was close by, I'd rather learn to do this on my own if I can...

parktool's web site has how tos on both of these adjustments. your front derailleurs high limit screw needs to be tightened (like you were screwing it in). it sounds like your RD just needs a barrel adjustment of the tension of the cable.

Sheldon Brown's site always has good info. https://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html
You can search the mechanics forum, lots of knowledgeable people there.

ok, great advice, went to work on it today and once i got my RD from hunting between gears i noticed it wouldn't shift into the lowest cog, made another quick cable adjustment by loosening the anchor bolt for the cable (barrel adjusters were bottomed out), reset high and low stops, tweaked the FD a little to reduce rub at the extremes of cross chaining (never will get it completely quiet it seems), but I seem to be where I need to be...

Thanks all!!!
