143 toupe to 155 Romin with a 155 toupe in the middle. The too-wide toupe stabbed me in the legs. Love the Romin. A tiny cleat adjustment has kept my feet from falling asleep with my new forward-hip-rotation riding position on the Romin. I feel like I am smoother and stronger (even though I'm totally out of shape right now). That's the biggest difference for me. The toupe encourages riding with the pelvis tucked under while the Romin fits a forward pelvic tilt better.

Had a new Phenom which has more padding than the Toupe. Still hurt like hell after an hour of sitting. All the pressure was on small pressure spots on my sit bones. Maybe I'm not used to hard saddles but I gave it 100 miles over a few rides and it didn't improve.

Switched to a Brooks Swift which seems a tad too narrow but so far I find it just acceptable on 2-hour rides. And it's new, not broken in yet!

I like the Toupe 130mm so much that I bought a second one for my rain bike.

But it's more sensitive to angle adjustment than other saddles. A couple degrees off and it's much less comfortable. A micro-adjust post is a must.

I went from a 155 toupe to a fizik aliante VS.

Both the Selle 1990 saddle and the ritchey streem....great fit for me vs the toupe

Romin just traded for a Brooks Professional

I've been riding the Toupe for about the last year. It seems like the more I ride it the less I like it. It took me several rides to get the angle right, so It's about as good as it's going to get. The Toupe isn't awful, I road 5 hours on it yesterday, but it just isn't as good as it should be. Any Fizik's product destroys me. I can't handle them.

I used to ride a Selle Italia SLK. After road-rashing it all up, I stuck it on my cross bike. A while ago I hopped on the cross bike when riding with my kids. Damned if that saddle didn't feel great, even in jean shorts. The SLK isn't particularly light or fancy, but it works good enough for me that I have one on order.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Phenom! It's like a better designed Toupe. Slightly more padding, no stupidly designed pointy edges. It rules.

This is the one I have, I really like it so far.

Replaced one I broke in a crash and one that broke under warranty with the same.

I likey the Toupe.

you guys did get measured for the correct saddle with right?

JonnyV 06-06-11 04:23 PM

Just spoke with the folks at QBP and ordered an Arione. Hopefully it'll be in by the end of the week, I'm pretty excited to try it!

Another converter to the Romin here. I didn't hate the toupe but didn't love it either. Love the Romin.

OP, is your head ready to explode yet?
There is no correct answer, it's all subjective.
My advice is to go to your LBS and ask them to demo a couple of saddles - Fizik, SMP, Selle italia, and others. Ride them for a couple hundred miles (not at a time) and see which works best for you.
FWIW I don't think you can go wrong with the Specialized Romin, I have 2 and may end up with a 3rd in the not too distant future. But that's what works for me.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses everyone, it's greatly appreciated!

I think I'm going to stick with the Toupe for a while longer and if it gets too unbearable I may try out the Arione.... or hit up the LBS and see what fits me best.

Specialized Romin. I used to swear by the Toupe until I rode this one. Awesome from day one!

Shows you how individual saddles are, I have a bunch of Toupe 143's on my bikes, I've logged tens of thousands of miles on them, great saddle for me.

I've never ridden a Toupe but i do ride an Arione and its a great saddle. Other bike has a Selle Italia SLK and i find that one comfortable as well.

Saddles are all personal preference.

I had a Toupe Team 130, then Prologo Scratch, now a Romin Gel 143. So far, I'm pretty happy with the Romin.
