Look 585 Lightweight Budget Rebuild Thread
So I bought a bike off eBay a while back, and have been mostly riding it. Was a little concerned about the fit, but after some tweaking, I'm pretty happy with the fit (I had no pain on a century this weekend). With approval from the wife, I am starting down the weight weenie path. I'm going to call this the starting point:
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/...1/c1dec0e6.jpg This is after I bought it and put on Hed Jet 60's, the Arione, Elite Patao alloy cages and Ultegra SPD-SL Pedals (and after I broke the rear brake line stop - getting fixed tomorrow). Weight here was 17.88lbs I bought some Zipp 404 clinchers this weekend. Dropped the weight a whopping 37grams to 17.80lbs. http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/...1/febceccd.jpg The goal is to get the bike under the magical 15lb line. Here's the current component list: Piece Name Weight Frame Look 585 XL 1385 Brakeset Tektro R750 314 Handlebars Deda 44cm 335 Wheelset Zipp 404 1658 Tires Conti 4000s 420 Tubes Avenir 240 Computer Cateye Strada 46 Bottle Cages Elite Patao Alloy 132 Shifters DA 7800 420 FD DA 73 RD Ultegra 205 Chain DA Hyperglide 264 Crankset Ultegra 6600 853 Stem Cannondale 80mm 140 Saddle Fizik Arione 245 Seatpost Look Ergopost 210 Cassette SRAM 12-26 229 Skewers Specialized 150 Pedals Ultegra 6610 317 Bar Tape Deda 70 And here's the proposed upgrade list, including weights: New Item Weight KCNC Brakes 164 3T Team Ergonova 197 Soul 3.0SL 1400 Elite Patao Carbon Cages 52 DA Crankset (Compact) 761 Arione Carbon 169 3T Doric LTD 144 Titanium eBay Skewers 55 DA 7900 Pedals 250 Microtex Tape 63 This adds up to a total weight loss of 1029g, or 2.27lbs, bringing the bike to 15.53lbs. Any suggestions on how to drop that last .53lbs? I know a wheelset would do it, but I'm looking to stay pretty bulletproof/aero/clincher - advice much appreciated. Also, I'm trying to keep the budget super low. As is, I have net about $697 in the bike (through some good ebay/craigslist dealings). The following parts have been ordered: 2x Elite Patao Carbon Cages (26g each), $69 shipped http://www.bikebitsuk.com/images/Eli...tle%20Cage.jpg eBay Titanium Skewers (55g for the set), $31 shipped KCNC Brakeset (164g for the pair), $140 shipped http://sales.light-bikes.com/kcnc/im...ake_parent.jpg That's it for now. More updates as pieces get ordered, arrive and get installed. |
What kind of weight weenie has that much steerer tube showing? Chop that down asap!
|
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Getting cut down tomorrow...
|
Cutting the fork tube will help. As far as the rest of the weight, lose a bottle cage and is that housing I see running the entire length of the TT? Zipties?
|
And remove the valve stem caps and lock nuts if they are on there. I'm no weight weenie, but on the dark path you travel, every gram counts.

Yeah - briefly mentioned above. The rear brake line stop snapped off the frame - Look gave me a new one, and the shop is replacing it tomorrow.
|
I think a good place to lose weight would be in shifters and cable housing and if you really want to go WW then sanding down the frame and refinishing it can save a lot of weight, and you can probably get a lighter crankset than DA.
|
yeah - cranks. I'd look at Sram red or Campy 10 Utratorque. Might be able to pick them up fairly cheap used.
|
you can lose about 100 grams with Rival shifters/rear derailer.

Also, these bottom brackets confuse me. What should I be looking for with regard to it? English, GXP, BB30.... |
Cannondale Evo frame. There. That ought to do it.

I have some Campy UltraTorque 10 spd cranks that I have used with both Campy and Shimano. Never had an issue. Wonderful crank too although can be tricky to install. Sram red cranks are super easy to work with though

Lightweight tubes would make it lose an easy 100+ grams for hardly any cash. Plus it improves ride quality, IMO

Good idea. So a quick googling reveals that the Campy 10sp stuff works just fine with DA 10sp shifters - anyone have evidence to the contrary?

Well, to be fair these would still weight in at around 180g, though that would still be saving 60 grams. Not bad for $20 |
Veloplugs will drop something like 36 grams per wheel off of whatever tape you're running. Plus you get the added bonus of having an easier time mounting tires.
|
Well, I've had a productive last few minutes.
3t arx pro stem - $25 http://www.excelcycle.com/images/D/3...o-stem-det.jpg 3t doric team seatpost - $40 http://www.e-cycle.co.jp/goodsphoto/DORIC-TEAM-450.jpg Fizik Arione CX Carbon Rails - $110 http://www.probikeshop.com/images/pr...rbone-Noir.jpg |
I love that frameset. It's a 2006, right?
It should be a nice build when you're done! |

I'm not sure what kind of budget you're on that warrants Zipp 404 clinchers and DA components, but I wish I were on that kind of budget...
