Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a mountain bike where the thing got yellow, old and cracked off. Frankly, there is a part of me that wants it back on given the number of things that can happen to the RD on a mountain bike. Maybe one of you guys can send me one of yours? (Now my road bikes, on the other hand, none of them came with them.)

Ask umd about the waving.

Oh I forgot, you can't ask him, because he was banned.
Well, I'd rather not get banned. I just searched "waving" and I found a pantload of threads that were quite boring. I'll assume that's the problem.

I try searching before I start threads. I'm new here... not to the interwebs.

Dork discs standard on road bikes? Like wut?

We have those things on children's bikes and maybe women's townbikes or so.

Canada is less litigious than the US, but we have dork disks too, even on high end bikes. And.....wheel reflectors on the spokes!

That's Fred right there.
And it goes nice with the black cable and contrasting yellow paint. I bet he has a matching yellow/black helmet too

The question is: are those dork discs more aero than without? ^^
And more importantly: where is the windtunnel testing data?!

Not cool, huh? Most of my riding is done at night. Does that make a difference?

And I actually have posted a pic of it....

Hardened BF member Vireo often rides a bike festooned with wheel reflectors and reflecting tape strips, lights and mirrors. One doesn't dare question his judgment, character, manhood or Fred status. I think he's the only one though. Everyone else is suspect.

If you ride at night, then get a good headlight and tail light. My night-bike also has reflective tape on it.

Yeah that ... with my headlights and blinky taillight it's impossible for anyone not to see me unless they're blind ... regardless of reflectors.
Reflectors are the summum of unaeroness and they should be on commuter bikes only ... there's a special forum for ghastly stuff like that.

I've got those. I'm just wondering what the downside is to having the reflectors. (Just dorky looking?) I'm thinking they provide additional visibility. FYI - Sincere question. Not being a dick.

Or just mount a strobe off a radio tower to your helmet. You'll be OK then.

Combine them into one thread, like this: Why don't those poseurs on their fancy BMC carbon bikes ever wave to me? I'm on my way to work, and they never wave back.

OK, thanks. Our posts crossed so I didn't see your response. I wondered if that was the reason, but it didn't seem like they'd make much difference. I'll pull them off. I use the little flea lights & they're pretty bright.

I don't have reflectors on my road bike or my Sirrus because those aren't ridden at night. The other utility-type bikes have them because they are ridden for practical purposes as well as recreation. That means night riding. I removed the front white reflector from a few of them though. Only the trikes still have that one. I also replaced the rear red reflector on a couple bikes with a Cateye Reflex taillight that has a built-in reflector.

"Yeah, I know they can see me with my half melted dork disk & huge reflectors. I'm gonna put my kickstand down & give them a piece of my mind!"

Something like that?
