Craigslist bike buying
I'm looking at three different bikes. The Spaulding is supposedly redone, the red bike needs minor upgrades and the blue bridgestone will need work. I'm a novice and am just looking for a bike to ride 5 miles to school/work and back. Links below.

Tough call as they differ quite a bit in specification. Your best bet is to always try to get the bike with the best components aka wheels, cranks and such.
Although it may not be in as nice of shape, the third bike seems to have some nice components. For your needs I think any one of them will work as long as they fit you well when you ride them. Fit is always a top priority.
Also, keep looking as great deals on CL always seem to pop up so don't settle just to get a bike tomorrow.
