Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Once a year they allow a lane for people to ride their bikes across it. The Mackinaw Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere and the 5th longest in the world at 5 miles. Gets a little sketchy driving across it pulling a snowmobile trailer in high winds, usually you have to wait for a escort to go across if its bad enough.

I tried to send some folks around NYC last week, to CT, via the Tappan Zee, but I don't think that bridge exists any more! (the Mario Cuomo Bridge seems to have replaced it)

For me, the Potomac River, that is the state line between WV and Maryland

This is His Spot

On the local riding trail, this gator is frequently sun-bathing in this spot and watching the cyclist go by or stop for pictures.

My bike with a typically elaborate Victorian water fountain in Finsbury Square in London. Ornamental confectioner Tom Smith, of Tom Smith & Co, and his brother Walter erected the fountain in 1898 in memory of their mother who passed away that year. Tom Smith is credited with the invention/introduction of the Christmas cracker, which we still have with our Christmas dinner here in the UK over 150 years on. See here for more info: https://londonist.com/2012/12/london...istmas-cracker

Sadly the water fountain is no longer connected so the only water in it is rainwater, but as everyone knows we're not short of that over here.

Top picture does not have a bike, bike I took the picture on the same ride. I really like the picture, Bethany Beach, so I am posting it. Second is a 2014 Orbea Avant with new HED Ardennes Performance wheels.

No bike, but from same ride.

Well, if it helps any, it's because it's on the mythical Danube River (far from home).

Admitting that you have a masochism problem is the first step to getting help.

BTW The grass is always greener. You might prefer the climate and topography of the Appalachian foothills, but maybe I would prefer the relative lack of development and 1,000 lakes to explore.

Um, that's actually 10,000 lakes, Unca_Sam. And you're right, it is pretty rural and rugged up north. I've ridden motorcycles in the Appalachians, beautiful country! Most evocative is the memory of riding above the fog down in the "hollers" early one morning.
