Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Help! ...Buying a bike today!

I have a choice between these two bikes. Which one would you reccommend?

1) 2002 mint Giant OCR 1. Ridden approximately 600 miles. Full Shimano 105 grupo. The MSRP for this bike is $1000. I could buy it for $530.

or

2) 2004 Giant OCR 2. Ridden 400 miles. Mostly Shimano Tiagra grupo with some shimano 105. Comes with a cordless cat eye 7 computer, water bottle cage and water bottle, and small saddle bag under seat. The MSRP for this bike is $850. I could get it for $600.

Need Help! Thanks

Unless the OCR1 is totally mint (and maybe even then) $530 is more than it is worth IMO. The OCR2 is much more in line, especially with the ad ons. These from a private seller or used at a bike shop? Same size?

If from private seller than offer $100 less on the OCR 1 and $50 less on the OCR2 for sure and think about the same at the LBS unless they are giving some amount of service.

Difference of 200 miles? That's nothing.

Full 105 that is barely used for $530 is a good deal.

Just an opinion, but I would go with the 2004 OCR 2 because of the newer frame design. Also, I can recommend it because I just bought one a few months ago and I love it. Rides smooth, and the Tiagra/105 shifts nicely now that it's broken in-almost as smooth as my XT combo on my MTB. The only gripe I have with it is the braking is a little spongy, and the brake pads themselves suck. They're too soft and tend to pick up metal from the rims. FWIW, I paid $775 for mine brand new (it was on sale). Don't think you could go wrong with either, though...

OCR1. The 'add ons' on the 2 aren't worth $25.The mileage difference and diference in years is meaningless.Try offering less and see what happens, assuming the prices aren't already rock bottom. If it doesn't fit, it's worthless.

Do any giant owners or former owners know about these bikes? The guy owning the OCR2 2004 said he would sell it for $550 ... what do you think? Need help quick ... I'll have to make a decision in about an hour!

Why the rush? Buy the one that felt the best under your butt, for goodness sakes.

You have to be able to trust yourself and how each bike feels to you, and make a decision on that, rather than take a last minute poll. I thought my advice was helpful, sorry if it was not.
