Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unfortunately, there's no shortage of stupid in this world.

LOS ANGELES – A driver plowed into a group of bicyclists on a midnight ride Thursday in a suspected drunken driving crash that injured 11 riders, at least one critically, police said.
A group of about 100 cyclists were on a ride about 8 miles south of downtown Los Angeles when they were struck by a Honda Civic shortly before 2 a.m.
Some bicyclists told KTTV a woman driving the car appeared to be using a cell phone before the crash. They said she slowed down then sped up and slammed into the group, sending some riders flying into the air and dragging at least one under her car.

Edited to avoid copyright issues and Fair Use compliance. See OP for link.

sure, never mind a group ride at 2am... by no means saying the riders were wrong, I just think they made a poor decision to be on a group ride that late...

I personally know someone who's son is a rolling drunk. No matter what they do the SOB keeps drinking and driving. he's lost his license twice. Luckily, he's only crashed into inanimate objects. Now he's on a bicycle of all things riding to work but he's been on probation for the past 2 years.

Honestly, that mofoe needs to just crash and die before he kills someone else. He's a lush no matter what and will always be a lush until the day he dies.

LA has a lot of morans like that. I'm sure that girl is one of them.

Its summer time and these fixie night rides are everywhere in LA. Critical mass and other night rides are everywhere. Surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner with the way people here drive.

My question is why they are stopped in a lane of traffic, with some off their bikes chatting?

That doesn't excuse the driver's conduct, but stopping in the road, past a blind curve, at night doesn't sound like a good idea.

Unless it's necessary transportation or you are riding where there is virtually no traffic, any 2 a.m. riding seems pretty dumb to me.

What a mess...

https://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...les&id=8193912

BALDWIN VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspected drunk driver was taken into custody after plowing into a large group of bicyclists in Baldwin Village early Thursday morning. Nearly a dozen people were hurt.

"It was as simple as a bowling ball knocking out a few pins," said witness Fred Armstead.

Authorities said the female driver, 27-year-old Christine Dahab, told police she was looking down at her phone when she crashed into the bike riders on the 5900 block of West Jefferson Place just before 2 a.m.

The bicyclists, organized by Midnight Ridazz, ride together regularly and were on the K-town ride. The group of bicyclists were waiting for their friends right below the Baldwin Hills scenic overlook at the time of the accident.

"The car just went straight toward the crowd, no swerving, no anything," said witness Cesar Arce.

Witness Kevin Martinez said people were sent flying into the air "like rag dolls."

Another rider said he warned others to get out of the way.

"I saw her first, and then I started calling everybody out, 'Hey everybody, merge right, get out of the bike lanes to the sidewalk,'" said one bicyclist. "She slows down. She sees us, I think, and I could see her engine rev, and she just takes everybody out."

Authorities said 11 people were hurt. Nine of those people were hospitalized, and one of them was listed in critical condition. The victim in critical condition, identified by friends as Roger Lucas, broke the windshield when he landed on the car upon impact.

"A lot of people rushed to the car to make sure she didn't rush out because she was dragging like two kids," said witness Steven Jimenez.

Dahab was arrested on suspicion of DUI, officials said. Her family says she lives in an apartment near the accident scene.

Police say the cyclists bear some responsibility because they were at the park after hours, and they found evidence of alcohol, condoms and marijuana where the group was hanging out.

Bikes are not allowed in the park area, but worst of all, the riders were hanging out in the first lane of vehicle traffic, which makes them partially at fault, according to police. The accident remains under investigation.

So what is a good time to ride? When there are no morons on the road? Is it when the American Idol is on ?

During daylight, or when drivers might expect cyclists to be on the roads.

Based on the article above, some of this may be a moot anyway, as "park" and "alcohol, condoms and marijuana" makes it sound like it wasn't much of a ride, anyway.

Did they find the evidence of bicycle lights? I am sure at least one bike must have had it.

Who knows what the deal is with this group, but in my very limited experience biking in LA, I noticed VERY quickly that LA area riders are very conscious about being well lit while on a bike. It'd wager that it's probably to avoid easy tickets from LAPD, but still - for the night ride I went on, with my rented madone(no lights for me, and not even a helmet! they were out of loaners...), I felt very 'odd man out' having no lights and no helmet.
