Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Morning group ride ends rear tire.

Just after finishing the hills that constitute our group ride, my "Continental GatorSkins" back tire ruptured. I though it was a flat, so upon replacing the tube and inflating again, the second tube popped like packaging bubbles... and this is the damage:

So my question is: can this be repaired safely, or is the tire unsafe to ride even repaired? If it is repairable, what is the best way to go about this?

The tire is done for. Boot it as a temporary fix until you get a new one.

And that is not "tragically". Get a new tire.

You might think about checking in between the tire and rim for tube next time you mount the tire. Just pinch the tire in and take a peek. Go all the way around, both sides of the tire. Likely a bit of tube trapped between the tire and rim is what caused the 2nd blowout.

it was star shaped and lined perfectly with the hole.

already purchased GP4000, but wanted to know if these could be repaired and donated...

Nope. Trash it, or cut it up and use it as a tire boot for your repair kit.

I don't they are kept short... the tragedy is that I was 10mi from home with no back tire on which to ride.

Can you please limit the word "tragedy" or "tragic" to people dying or seriously getting hurt at least?
Wouter Weylandt ... THAT was tragic.

What you have there is not a tragedy but a broken tire ... get a new one they're cheap enough.

No doubt the second tube burst when it protruded through the hole in the tire. The GP4000s are a big improvement over the Gatorskins, so maybe you're already better off.

BTW, PBK often has great tires like the GP4000 at a good discount. It pays to keep an eye of the site and buy ahead when they're cheap.

A bad day on the bike is still better than a good day at work.

I did that two weeks ago, with my little toe, I had broken it. That hurt like a MF, but even that wasn't a tragedy.

Crying wolf is the downfall of others.

A member of our local racing community died this week.

12 people were injured in LA; one is critical.

Those are tragedies.

The thread title is misguided. I would ask a moderator to edit it.

First lesson repairing a flat is to determine what caused the flat. Otherwise you're just wasting another tube.

Thanks for the BeeGees. I also feared another death or injury report, I'm relived it's just a tire.

IME the major drawback with Gatorskins is that the sidewalls get cut easily. All of the meat is in the center, and the reinforcement they put on the sidewalls is not good enough.

I did that to a Gatorskin on a very hot day; the tire was probably somewhat under-inflated and coming off a curb pinch-flatted it.
I, too, was blown away by the switch to GP4000s - much better ride, and seemingly equal durability.
