Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie Madone dilemma

While shopping at LBS ; I have an offer to buy 2010 Madone 5.1 WSD with Rival gear about $150 less than 2011 madone 4.5.
I know WSD is specifically designed for women but I am not fully convinced if men cannot ride this with few adjustments. I do not care about WSD label (which can be covered using tape) or its Blue/White color of 5.1 WSD ; As LBS promised to work on fitting adjustments for me as needed.
I am inclined towards 5.1 as better value & need your opinion.
What is the better choice?
Thank You!

Does it fit? WSD usually means a shorter top tube and sometimes levers with less reach. If you're short and have long legs for your height then a WSD bike might be a good fit.

But fit is the important thing. A good deal that doesn't fit isn't really a good deal.

The wsd also has narrower handlebars - my wife has the 4.7. I think that the geometry is different in the 5 series and 4 series so you may want to try each one.

I am 5' 5" average built and have not had "fit" session at LBS yet since I have not fully committed to buy any bike yet.
My thought is LBS should be able to adjust few items for better fit.

Thanks

5'5" puts you in the women's size. Go for it.

I have a 2010 Madone 5.1, not the WSD model though. It's a very nice bike for the money and I love the Rival group. At your size, the WSD might be the way to go. I'm 5'8" and almost got a WSD myself. You won't regret the 5.1.

Yes, you will care about the WSD label. At the post-ride coffee shop.

As others say, fit is everything. I would not hesitate to buy a womens bike if it fit. Heck I have little hands and even with spacers in my brifters still don't feel that comfortable with them descending at high speeds. Planning of looking at all options to include brifters for a "womans" bike.

One thing to consider is that resale for women's bikes is usually harder to arrange and you'll have to lose more money on resale.. Women often use "men's" bikes.

A few months back I bought my wife a new, 2011 Madone 5.2 WSD. The idea was that we would go riding together. Now she tells me that she does not want to ride it anymore and the bike is gathering dust, hanging from the garage ceiling.

It makes me sad to see such a nice bike not getting used. My wife is only a tad shorter than me and I am sooooooooooo tempted to change a few of the components and just start riding her bike.

It is those darned pink frame details that are keeping me from riding it though.

Thank You all. I might stop by at LBS later today and will post details.

eja_-bottecchia >> sorry to hear that; wondering what stopped here from riding...

The frame colour of the bike in question does not look to bad to me http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ve/madone51wsd; what do you guys think.

Thank You !

I'd find a way to cover the wsd logos but I'd ride the crap out of that thing. I actually just got done playing on trek project one. Wow! Talk about a droolfest. 6.9 madone ssl with a custom paint job and full di2 set up. Now I just need to find 10K lol

It looks fine. The 2011 Leopard/Trek Pro racing team uses a very similar blue color on their bikes and jerseys.

Dude, one of my Merckx bikes is purple and even if it was pink I'd ride it. I bet you'd rock that bike.....

If the fit is right, I'd go for it... I would probably cover up the WSD though.

Congrats on your new bike and welcome to the Madone Club! The more you ride it the more you'll come to appreciate the better frame with the 5.1.

a lot of smaller womens bikes have steep seat tube angles to avoid toe overlap, which makes them a bit aggressive kind of like a TT set-up. Check out the geometry. What feels fine on a quick ride near the shop might turn into an uncomfortable bike after 20-30 miles.
