Anyone ever put a high-end component on a cheap bike for kicks and giggles?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seeing that thread with the Fredly photos of some nice time trialing bikes made me wonder if anyone's ever put some sort of high-end componentry on a beater bike. I think you'd get a lot of funny looks. I almost want to do it just to see some faces.

Photos if you have them por favor.

don't all fixie riders do this with either the $120 brooks saddle on their $100 frame or $500 worth of aerospokes?

I seem to recall once seeing a photo of a regular wheelchair with some Zipps on it. Anyone have that?

I've sat on and ridden a cheap bike. Would that classify me as the high-end component??

So does one classify a high end component by its price or usefulness and is a cheap bike based on the worth of your perception?

It's been done - on grand commercial scale, and is still being done as we speak. Behold:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...y/team_wht.htm

Dura ace on a frame that's probably worth <$200, tops.

Yes.

And this thread is supposed to be comic relief for all of the seriousness that goes on around here. I haven't found one ounce of humor or sarcasm on this website. So thank me, because I'm saving you all from dying early due to the immense stress of living as a cyclist.

Holy crap. $1200 for a whole bike with DA shifters and derailleurs... if you buy those separately they come to about... $1200.

O_O

...Oops, that was Di2 shifters costing $850... why the hell are they $300 more than mechanical ones, FFS? The shifters should be way simpler.

What are you complaining about? $1200 for a Dura Ace equipped bike ain't a shabby deal.

I have a pic somewhere but eons ago, in the shop, we were building a Panasonic Sport 500 (bottom end bike) and a DeRosa with Super Record. Stuck the rear der on the Sport 500 just for kits and shniggles. Didn't do the opposite so as not to harm the DeRosa's karma.
