Is my fear of shop rides irrational?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i mean if JSChristian44 is willing to show up and race in a tri with his tri bars zip tied on, frame pump zip tied to his RD cable, and planning to rest on the booies during the swim. i think you can make it threw your local 30mi shop ride.

You can read a thousand posts and not understand a quarter of what you'll learn on your first group ride. Stop worrying and do it. Its like dancing- if you do what everyone else is doing you'll be fine.
Yep. Keep in mind, the "no-drop" policy is sometimes applied differently depending on how much they like you. The more annoying the rider, the more often they seem to fall off the back of the group. Don't be "that guy" and you just might be able to keep up.

thanks, like I said I ride mountain with these guys every week. I can't really keep up with them in the dirt, but the difference isn't overly drastic.

Worst case scenario you get dropped and finish the ride solo. I understand you don't want to get up so early. But is it really that big of a deal to get up early one morning?

Greg, I'm sitting in my office right now, lol. I'll be going on the ride next week the 26th. It's tough for me to get Sundays off since I work in hospitality.

lmao at the fact I'm nervous enough I posted this question a week early... err... posted it at all.

If you know them so well, and ride with them weekly, why don't you just try it or talk to them about it? Posting a thread on a message board and checking the racing club website will not get you anywhere, LOL. This is pretty laughable... You're overthinking and overplanning things and going about things in the least efficient way possible.

As stated before, I've asked them how fast they ride and they just shrug their shoulders. Thanks for your non-productive input.

As for the rest of you, I'll post a well thought out report that hopefully can serve as a guide to other noobs in my situation in the future.

OP, stop the friggin handwringing and just go ride with the group. Get up early, finish the ride early before the heat kicks in, no brainer.

Seems like you enjoy obsessing over this stuff, like the attention you get from your obsession, and keep bumping your own threads to make sure they never fall off page one.

The speed of each ride might vary depending on who shows up. If they have a few strong riders, they can change the whole dynamics of the ride and turn it into a hammerfest. They don't show and it might be a more relaxed paced ride. Or they might just not want to tell you since you seem to be worrying so much. I'd guess they are picking up on that, since it is so obvious here.

Just go ride.

So responding to people who respond to my thread is trying to get attention and bump my thread now? hmm I must misunderstand what forums are for.... lmao

Get there with your knees shaking.

I know I did that with my first group-ride. I've been a solo rider for most of my cycling life, and only did two climbs out in the mountains with my mother (a top triathlete and iron-woman) when I had the chance to join a local team's training ride for a taste. From the start, it was said to be a harsh workout to prepare the team for another upcoming Tri, and the brief scared me senseless: 36km/h cruising, leader changing every 5 minutes and has to attempt a breakaway sprint each time. For two hours, not including arrival (by bike), warm-up and cool-down. Not only did I keep up, I ended up enjoying it thoroughly and even succeeded in my breakaway attempt. If only I could find the time to join their regular rides...

Yep, when every 3 or 4 posts are from you, i think you do misunderstand. Or you're just a little obsessive and thrive on attention. I can't think of anyone else here who does that...

it's called a conversation. I'm one person speaking with many, so of course I'm going to reply more than anyone else by far.

Thanks for your concern. As always, stuff you don't like on the internet is just one click from being out of your view.

This one.

Some groups are fast, others not so fast, others slow. You will never know where you stand unless you try.

I've found that just keeping my mouth shut, watching the experienced group riders, and listening and learning is the best way to get started on group rides. It won't take very long for you to know if you will get dropped or you can keep up. I've been on group rides where I was barely keeping up and I knew that at some point I was going to be alone....that's usually on the first or second hill! Other group rides I've been able to keep up fine.

To be perfectly honest, I don't enjoy group rides all that much. I find it too competitive and it stresses me out. I've joined group rides only to find out where I stand in the pecking order of things in my area and I've come to the realization that I am not the fastest nor the slowest. The fastest riders are those that ride A LOT and ride fast A LOT. These riders get to a hill, drop down a gear or two and climb at 12-15 mph then SPEED UP near the crest!!! I can do that on a short hill but long hills I can do that once and then I need to recover!

Oh and when riders say they plan to just "take it easy" or they are "not that fast", prepare for a Pain Fest! LOL!
