Shimano Dura-Ace Carbon Clincher Wheelset V Zipp 303 Clinchers

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Dura-Ace Carbon Clincher Wheelset V Zipp 303 Clinchers

I was offered $800 for my 6 month old Dura Aces and LBS has a set of 2009 brand new 303's that he will let go for $1500 out the door.
I love my Dura Aces but this seems like a great deal.
I ride on every kind of road and do allot of climbing. My weight is 140.
Anyone with experience using the two?

Cheers.

Why didn't you just buy the Zipps to begin with. Seems like more a great deal for whoever is offering you $800 for the DA wheels as well as your LBS.

You failed to mentioned which carbon Dura Aces exactly you are comparing.
C24?
C50?
There's a difference in weight between various types.

I have the DA7850 versions of the C24.

The Zipp 303 wheelset will be heavier but more aero.

I consider the hubs a tie; they are both high quality.

Ah, the infamous old aero test: https://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-15505311.html

No 303s in there, and it's kinda comparing apples and oranges (tubulars and clinchers) but the article mentions the dura ace wheels actually are an outlier with unusually good aerodynamics, at least in a straight line in a wind tunnel. I wouldn't count on the 303s providing that much of an aero benefit. I'm not sure on weights, but I'll bet the shimanos are a lot lighter, and you're definitely going to shell out money in the deal. The zips are 2009. I don't know the differences but I'd venture to guess they aren't as good as a fresh set of 303s, and esp. a set of 303 carbon clinchers which may be coming soon, resulting in people trying to dump te aluminum clinchers. those shimano wheels are supposed to have good lateral stiffness and good hubs too. I'd just keep them.

If you ever want to sell the Zipps, they are two years old right away. Right now $1500 is a high price for two year old wheels even if the seller says they are nearly new. If Zipp comes out with CF 303 clinchers, they will make the Al worth much less.

On the flip side, 303's are aero. They are 44 deep so you get benefits of speed without worrying about strong crosswinds. Velenews gave them the best all around wheel recognition in their 2011 buyers guide.

I would make the LBS an offer of $1200 and see where that leads.
