2012 Giant

Giant has announced their models for 2012 and the entire line has been redesigned. New frame called SL-0 that will be above the SL and it is coming in TCR and Defy versions. Also the entire line will now have integrated cable routing and every bike will be Di2 compatible.

I was hoping they were going to abandon the "integrated seatpost"

I love those new wheels that Giant is offering. They will be aero, carbon, light, and significantly less expensive than similarly constituted wheels from most of the name manufacturers. Once Giant gets into making and branding a component, the prices tend to come down for everybody else.

Fugly stem

BarryJo 06-28-11 08:09 PM

These two bikes will retail for $12,500 (SL 0 ISP) and $4,400 (Advanced 0).
That'd be a deal breaker for me. At least next year.

12,500 essentially makes it a dentist bike. Unless they come up with some less ugly color schemes it won't do particularly well.

RT 06-30-11 09:26 AM

I anticipate Pcad humping this thread like a cat in heat :innocent: Di2 compatible. I like the look, but yes, the stem is out of place. Looks like it belongs on a DH bike.

gus6464 06-30-11 09:37 AM

The stem has somewhat the same shape as those funky bontrager stems. Looks like Rabo will be using the Defy SL-0 for Paris-Roubaix next year. As far pricing goes the top model SL-0 is meant for the tours so of course it's going to have a ridiculous price tag. I am pretty sure they are going to sell it as frameset only as well to bring the price down. The SL and SL-0 are too much for me so I will be looking at the Advanced for next year. Hoping Giant still keeps the price tag of the new Advanced at ~$1300 even with the new enhancements.

Agreed. It reminds me of that hideous LOOK C stem. Lp

Stickney 06-30-11 09:59 AM

Velonews mentioned that Giant increased the fork steering tube dimensions for stiffness and as a result standard stems won't fit. Hence, I believe that is a Giant specific stem. 1.25" to 1.5" tapered steering tube -- not 1.125.

other companies make 1.25" stems, but the options are limited.

They have models without the ISP.

Here's mine a none ISP 2012 Giant TCR Advance SL. Only bought the frameset and use the syntace f119 stem. Aside from the ugly look of the giant 2012 stem it will take me another month to order it.

Yes, they are now using a 1 1/4" steerer tube same as Canyon's. There is a new stem option from FSA and you can now buy the Ritchey stem thru a UK Tandem store aside from ordering it thru Canyon but those two are way out of my budget. Another option is the syntace f119 which I have in my build see the pic below bought it on a Australian online shop 50% off from Syntace SRP. FYI I debadge the stem using a paint remover.

Are you on Weight Weenies? There was a poster there who also got an Advance SL and was disappointed to find that the small frame weighed in over 1kg. Did you weigh your frame before assembly? If so what was the weight?

I'm very interested in the 2012 Giant Defy Advanced SL but would be upset if it was really half a pound more than advertised as it was supposed to be in just under 900g according to the initial release information.

coasting 12-13-11 09:29 AM

hmmmm. internal cable routing.

I believe as the bikes get to smaller sizes the top tube slopes more.

ussprinceton 12-13-11 04:51 PM

what are the weights of these 2012 models stock built?

echotraveler 12-13-11 05:42 PM

Yeah the frame weight heavier than expected. I thought it would be above 900g but mine was 1.19kg including seat clamp, ridesense and derailleur hanger.

Yea for as small a frame as that is that is WAY over weight.
