Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mileage

I'm glad to see I'm getting some good mileage. My most ever within a month. 8 to 5 job. First season riding

660 in a month is almost twice what I have been doing. Good job. I find it tough to find time to ride every day. In fact, I am lucky if I get three days a week.

Thanks! This month has been good (my personal record) as I've done a Century and have been squeezing consecutive 50 or 60+ rides on weekends aside from 35+ rides on 3 or more weekdays. All with groups.

You're doing better than I am. Of course I usually have at least one mountain to climb in every week and a bunch of major hills to conquer along the way. It really screws up my average speed and how far I want or can ride.

Well done sir. Where are you getting a cumulative Mt. Everest gain in elevation in Philly? Good God man, I'm in Colorado at the base of Pikes Peak and don't get that in 500 miles a month.

Thanks RTDub!

Although there are no real "peaks" around here, we do have some nice hilly terrain above and around the city. I'm starting to really enjoy hillier rides such as the 3 I post below. The "Manayunk Wall" (Levering / Lyceum Ave is a short and steep fun climb) , but best are the more gradual rolling terrain in the neighboring counties.

Note my first century with 6,500ft ascent.

Maybe sometime soon I can do some climbing in CO!

I rode 13,700 miles in 2006. See if you can top that, and get back to me.

I thought about trying to match that Brit who actually rode 70,000+ miles in a year back in the 1930's, but I don't think I can really beat that dude.

All kidding aside (as if) keep hammering, and well done.

Nice! I usually get in about 10,000 miles per year. It is hard to do more with a full time job.

Nice! I'll have about 700 in my first month of riding, if all works out. Got a few more days I can hopefully use.

This is also with taking a week off as well, so hopefully I should be able to top that.

But then again, there's hardly any hills around here (and when I find one, I go up and down quite a few times)...

Nice mileage man! I only wish I could get that kind of mileage in. You're literally trudging through my backyard on your one ride...if you wouldn't mind an extra in your group every now and then let me know. I'm game.

Thanks! You're more than welcome to join any of the rides! All of these groups are open for everyone, and a lot of fun. Rides leave from different locations on different days of the week. I'll be glad to give you the info via PM. Let me know.

Don't forget to consider all the traveling to and from road races in the middle of nowhere and the various stage races.

don't tell me, tell him!

He just won Mt. Whitney Stage race (first in both stages and GC), came home saying it was a good way to end the season, until Everest, of course, then two days later, he said he wanted to do Cascade. FML. Racing while we are on vacation, too. We'll see how relaxing this vacation is.

600 miles a month WITH a job?? Congrats. That is a lot of riding. My goal is 300-400 a month and 3,000 this year.
