TdF for the 41 (spoiler warning)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can someone explain if there is any reasoning behind this custom? Because it seems to me that if I want to take my sunglasses off, if the arms are under my helmet straps it doesn't matter, they still come off just fine. Whereas if I want to take my helmet off but not my glasses, then I can't do that with the arms over the straps because then the glasses come off along with the helmet.

If you crash you don't want your glasses to tangle with your helmet straps, you want them to fly as far away from your face as possible.

So I'm sitting here wearing my Izod shirt (with collars up), enjoying a smooth Michelob Ultra while watching the final club ride into Paris. I've decided to assemble a few random thoughts about the tour....

Worst Teams (in no particular order)
- Saur. As near I could tell the highlight for this team was that one guy over cooking two corners on a descent and going into a driveway. Basically the French equivalent Jelly Belly at the Tour of California.
-Katoooooosha. Worst moment - having a riding DQ'd for doping. Best moment - Vladamir Karpets hip checking Contador. Handle bar getting stuck...yeah right
-Quickstep. Highlight was Tom Boonen bravely trying to ride after his bell was rung.
-Radioshack. Mostly due to bad luck. But still not ever once getting in a meaningful breakaway. Levi Leipheimer finishing 78th in the ITT behind such luminaries as Gorka Verdugo Marcotegui.....mail it in much?

Various Observations
-Worst helmet - Eusakatel-Eusakadi - It like they're that old lady you see riding around with helmet on backwards
-Least mentioned bad commercial - Certain Dri.
-Its damn near impossible to avoid spoilers during the day while while waiting to get home to watch the TDF on DVR. Ways that I had endings ruined for me...checking Facebook, my cycling team president sending a mass email with a spoiler in the title, some d-bag BF'r posting a thread in the 41 about how bad ass Gilbert is, sports radio hourly sports updates (seriously...you never once talk about cycling ever...just stick to baseball), random guys talking about it before the weekly hammer fest, my dad texting me 'Andy Schleck is the man!'
-I would like VS to have more coverage of the early parts of the race...where the breakaway forms. There was one stage near the end where the breakaway didn't form for like 90km into the stage and the teams were fighting like crazy to get in the breakaway. As a weekend back of the pack Cat 3 racer, that was really exciting.
-I also wouldn't mind a daily podium girl profile (that's a guy thing)
-I am also disappointed in Dario
-was there really enough toilet facilities for the drunken mob on the Alpe D'Huez?
-Cavendish wins the TDF whiners competition, but the all-black Specialized with green lettering that he was riding (just had a bike change as I type this) is awesome
-So was Garmin-Cervelo using the new powermeter pedals? Maybe next year, huh? Seriously people just buy a Quarq already.

I like the Odin

Ironically i bought an Izod tie last night...I felt like I did my part for the Tour...it was a triumphant moment at the checkout counter...then I thought about how I could surf while wearing it.

Much of that list is rather silly and poseur-ish

You'd think 1 or 2 other teams would be able to lead out their sprinter by now.

Did anyone notice the people making out in the background as Bob from HTC was getting interviewed about the team? Thought that was humorous.

My opinion of Contador wasn't very good until he backhanded the clown in the doctor costume, there should be a time bonus for that.

I never understood this...I bought good glasses because they offer eye protection, but when you eyes need protection you want them launched off?

I go under...in real life it seems about 50/50 on rides near me.

Re: glasses...you want the glasses to protect your eyes when riding. However when falling you don't want them to become a danger (slicing/cutting) to your eyes. Especially if your head hits the pavement...they're probably as much a danger to your eyes at that point.

And today's finish...I've always thought that Cav acted like a bit of a jerk, but you have to give him and the team props. He started today's stage as the favorite and a marked man. Everybody knew he would go for the win. In spite of all of that attention, HTC STILL got the leadout setup and executed it perfectly. Absolutely amazing.

That kind of follow-through on promise/potential is what makes his teammates willing to give it all for him. They know, more often than not, Cavendish will deliver and reward their efforts.

And Contador...I've never liked him, but he certainly deserves a lot of respect for how he rode when everybody was counting him out. Punching the ass spectator on Friday...priceless!

All-in-all, a damn good tour!
