Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you have one? And "why" magnesium?
I know of it's uses in tools...I have some.
But how are their applications for bicycles?

I'm still riding my 1994 C'dale M700. Over the years everything has been replaced at least once except the frame, fork, and handlebar.

My "Magnesium"...

Lightest gun available at 4.9lbs, super tough, excellent balance...I love it.
(also have a ladder in mag).

I try to buy as much of my equipment in aluminum as much as possible.
It's just trouble/worry-free (waterproof, rust proof, strong, lasts for years, etc...).

I'm a big fan of magnesium. Pinarello was producing a Dogma in magnesium. I don't know.
I really wish a bike would be created out of metal that had the same benefits of carbon.
I think it's becoming a mental block for me know.
I've never seen a metal bike fail like carbon bikes have.
I'm like Mulder..."I want to believe."

One time I was at the bike shop and there a Cervelo hung on the wall. Price tag $4,500.

I tapped the down tube with my finger nail and it sounded like a snare drum.

^ That's a pretty kick ass value. I can't play a drum beat on my commuter bike while I ride to work.

Cervelos are known to break periodically, you should've bought something else.

This makes me wonder if any of these bikes will survive to become vintage. What happens when your carbon frame and/or wheels are 10 or 30 years old?

The ONE thing I never worry about breaking when riding my steel bike is the frame, never even considered the possibility.

For me, I think that sub-50 mile rides are not an issue (especially with my build).
I'm always one to do research and know that if I get a lemon or a particular
frameset that is the 1 bad apple of the bunch, so be it. I'll have to deal with it.

That Cervelo R3/5 is a gorgeous bike. It's my favorite (the new R5 is off the hook).
Maybe I might go custom instead of mass produced by a local craftsman (like Parlee).
Once Trek started producing their carbon frames overseas, failure rates skyrocketed.

That's one thing about my bike...I never worry about it asploding on me.
I've hurled down mountains at 40mph and it's felt 100% safe.
I used to have a Trek 1.5 (the first series back in '09).
Excellent bike, but it'd get squirrely when I'd push it.
(EVO, EVO...please have a good track record by the time I'm ready to buy!)

Oh yeah, OP! Pics or it didn't happen! Let's see the new & improved R3 you got!

Me first!
Word.

This thread has been entertaining, but the sum of the posts from both sides helps me to this very conclusion. I draw the line at a carbon fork, and even then the quality is different with each. The quality of a CroMo or Alu fork is less of a concern. Carbon frame is for wussy

Ride heavy, ride strong.

Not everybody wants or likes vintage. It is a specialty niche...and people buying carbon bikes are not usually in the mindset of keeping the bike for that purpose.

Question:
Is it true that carbon frames have a usable "life" of about 8 years?

Cervelos come with a lifetime warranty. If it breaks, it's their problem, not yours.

Why are you trolling? If you want to know the life span of a carbon frame, ask some material engineers instead of a room full of people who bought carbon frames last year. Jumping on someone else's bad day as an opportunity to push some kind of agenda is a bit ghoulish.

Wow. Well, if it's not obvious, there are people here who would have that answer.
"How" I find that information shouldn't bother you that much that you have to insult people.
Relax. Sorry if what I asked offended you.

Doubtful.... if that was the case, every carbon wheel manufacturer would be doing a recall in year 7 of ownership. LOL

You metal weenies are missing the point again. Carbon is better in every way than your Fred Flintstone dinosaur powered abominations.

AND....

If they break, which I hope mine will in about fiveish years, I get a free upgrade to the newest and bestest model.

Who's laughing now you metal heads?

Yes. That's how Boeing intends to sell more planes. Make customers buy new ones every 8 years. Same thing applies to evil bike manufacturers.

Lifetime warranty for the original owner. Does not cover "normal wear and tear or damage or failure caused by accident, misuse, abuse or neglect or any modification of the frame or its components . . "

I guess if you change any components on the bike they have the right to void your warranty.

Well, hopefully you never buy a used carbon bike because that expensive frame failure won't be covered under the warranty. And don't upgrade any components, because that may void the warranty too. Just watch as the resale value of your expensive foo-foo, burned-fabric-dipped-in-epoxy frames plummet when the second-hand frames decompose in front of their owner's eyes and they can't get free replacements.

Meanwhile I'll continue to ride my antique steel dinosaurs that are still worth twice what I paid for them new.

Sorry, I just had to write that, I do respect the new technology, I just had to stand up for Fred Flintstone.

Yes I have a lemond triomphe/ carbon which looked exactly like that. Do you still have this frame? Please reply. And yea all I did was file it down a little with a circular file to make it hold a wheel for single speed or even a universal hanger however this isn't as reliable as a regular hanger. It is a nice carbon frame going to waste if not! I will buy this From you if you are willing to. I like to ride fixed and single speed .But yeah let me know what you did with it please since its a few years later
