Three speed road bikes

Howdy folks,

I'm trying to build a 3-speed road bike with an old sturmey archer hub, and everything was going real smooth, until I counted the holes on the hub, and the stupid thing had to have 40. What the hell is 40? Has anyone ever heard of (or know where to buy) a 40-hole 700C rim? I'll even settle for 27, just please let me avoid 26x1 3/8.

Ideally this would be a 40H 700Cx23.

Or can LBS's get non-drilled rims and drill them for me?

Any advice on the topic of three-speed road bikes is welcome.

Thanks--

my 90's univega has a 40 hole rim in back, it's 700c. Old miche competition hubs, and xanthus alloy rim. Might be able to find a similar rim on an old junker at a thrift shop? Or maybe a long-standing LBS would have some in a closet somewhere.

good luck!

eee 40 hole is not an easy find nowadays. You might be able to get blank rims but that wont be easy eitehr, probably eaiser than getting a 40 hole

A few years ago, I was able to get a Mavic 40 hole rim to replace the original SuperChampion rear rim on my 1984 Specialized Expedition Touring through a LBS. Don

Hi. I don't know if you're still looking or not, but you should be able to get modern touring rims in 40 hole. I have Velocity Dyad rims on my fixed gear (mine are 36 hole), but I seem to recall that they were also made in 40 hole for touring applications. They are very durable, too!

Yes, here we go:

You'll have to click on Road rims and scroll a little bit. Good luck!
