Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good roadbike for a beginner with lots of riding experience

Hey I'm thinking about getting a road bike but since i'm a downhill mountain biker i've came here to look for the help of people that can help, or something like that.

Some may have seen my thread in singlespeed/fixed gear section and I still am thinking about getting a singlespeed but I will get one or the other, hence why its in the thinking stage still.

My budget is $2000 and thats the absolute max as I'm still in highschool so I need to start saving soon for college/university. I'm just under 6ft and 125-135lbs. On average i'm very thin and tall for my age of 16.

I do have a lot of biking experience as in 2005 my family biked across Canada, making me the unofficial youngest person to do it as I did it when I was 10. Now i've done downhill Mountian biking for 2 years going onto 3.

I've always ridden Norco's my whole life (Cherokee, Pinnacle, Shore One) and I've never had a problem with them so If possible I'd like to stay with them but If they don't make good road bikes then I'm willing to change as long as I get the best bike for my budget of $2000.

I've looked into the fallowing bikes so far: Masi Evo' 105
Devinci CX 4
Norco CRR 3
Scott Speadster S10

I haven't seen the prices of any of the bikes other than the Scott so I know some may be way over budget. I do love the look of the Masi

I hope someone can help as I have no clue about anything regarding road bikes.

Thanks

I'm biased because I've got one, but you brought it up, so...

Your budget gets you into the range of the Scott CR1s, which was my pick after riding quite a few frames over our budget. I'm a HUGE fan, and the whole CR1 line (Other than the SL) uses the same frame, and the cheaper couple are in your price range. Gets my vote.

Thanks for the info JustinHorne. I never thought to look at the CR1 line as they looked way more expensive.

Does anyone know if you could take a Masi Evoluzione frame and start the build as a singlespeed and then slowly build up to a full on custom Roadbike? Or is the frame not able to work with a singlespeed/fixed gear? The reason I ask is because i want the feel of a single speed but also a normal road bike so I thought maybe start off with a good frame but a single speed and then when I have the money upgrade parts slowly making into a good road bike.

$2000 for a ss? Stupid. You are 16. Get a $500 bike on c-list and put the rest of your money into an IRA for retirement. You are growing too much to drop that kind of coin on a bike. And there's no reason you can't get both types of bikes. A SS/FG doesn't need much money if you don't mind building up a conversion. I have a Fuji FG that I built up for bumming around college for less than $200 I had a reliable bike that did everything I asked for 5 years.

@ Vicelord I'm a beginner in road bikes, but MTB and bike touring I have ridden over 10000km

@ vespoli: I wouldn't be dropping $2000 on a singlespeed I would buy cheap parts but good frame and then build it up. Oh and i'm growing to much to drop that kind of money? I bought a 09 Norco Shore one for $5400 last year and over $2000 on armour and gear so I know what i'm doing. And I've earned all this money, since age 14 I've been working 26 hour weeks to pay for this and then full time in summer and holidays. so no offence but don't tell me I don't know what i'm doing as I do, MTB is my life, and I've been on 2 wheels my whole life.

If you want evidence that I rode across Canada in 2005 I can show you.

I think this kind of "advice" is unwarranted. You could have said all of that stuff minus the first few sentences and not looked like a complete and total ass hole.

Just ignore him and take the good advice others will give you. There will always be naysayers, especially around here.

Dude the kid wants to spend his money on a bike, at his age I was thinking only of spending my money on alcohol and partying. I would def. not say he is stupid, but seems like very well balance kid that has his priorities right. Heck I wish I could be as "stupid" as he is when I was 16, it would save me way more money .

You have a solid list there. If I can recommend anything try Cannondale CAAD 10. Get your behind out to your LBS and test ride as many as you can and buy the one that feels best. Good luck.

+1 on the Scott CR1. The frame is without a doubt one of the best you can get for the price, and whilst the stock components it comes with aren't great, you can always upgrade them a few years down the line when you've worn your current set out.

Thanks guys.

I admit I was a little annoyed when I wrote my last post but as snajper69 said, atleast i'm not buying booze and drugs. I haven't done either yet and I don't plan on anytime soon.

I have though about the Cannondale CAAD 10 but my bro has one and are bikes would be right beside each other and they may get mixed up. But like some people said try as many as I can in my price range and then buy the best one that fits. I guess i'll try that then when I have the money...

I'm still open to other bike company's that arn't as known as long as there reliable.

Are you ignoring my recommendation of the CR1 and the Wilier?

No i'm not i'm reading every word that people including you say on there post's. I'm just busy packing for a 2 week long MTB trip leaving Today (09/07/2011) so I forgot to acknowledge your reply. I will look into the CR1 as i don't mind getting a great frame but low end parts and then upgrading them when they were out. The Wilier looks sweet btw! I love Red, and Black paired together with some White also.

For what it's worth, I definitely wouldn't consider 105 on the CR1 Comp low end.

Me to as 105 vs ultegra don't make that much difference except hit you wallet harder. I would never get a bike with lower components than what I want, it gets expensive fast when you want to upgrade. My thing is spend the money now in order to save later. If you discipline enough that you will wait till things start braking before upgrading than that's not an issue. I never seem to last that long . CAAD 10 is a great bike and many people in our riding group have one, we just personalize it a bit in order to be able to tell a difference. I would still pick a bike that rides great over a brand name, ride quality last longer than a brand lust .
