Oh... and as mentioned above, go easy on that rear brake. One skid "good" skid and you can ruin a brand new tire, not to mention your rear brake can't stop the bike very quickly anyways. See this link for some better braking tips: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/brakturn.html
Funny you should mention that. About a week or so back I and another guy wasn't paying attention to what the group was doing. Going down a fast hill and the rest of the group a good ways ahead of us stopped. The other guy and I didn't realize it until I had no choice to lock them up. He went around the group I was on the inside.

I know this is BikeForums blasphemy, but I've switched away from GP4KS. The black chili compound is great in the dry and even some damp conditions, but I gave some Veloflex Corsas a try. 2000 miles in, the Veloflexes have had no flats at all and handle glass cuts way better than the GP4KS -- which has caused me flats in the past. Looking at a 2000 mile GP4KS, its littered with 1-2mm glass cuts all along the tire. I run both at 100psi. I get them for roughly the same price as the GP4KS and I don't have to wait over a week for them to get here from the UK.

As for ahson's question... It was about 1,000 miles or so before I got a flat. I drove through a pile of sticklers and got one stuck. Needle was probably 1/2 a centimeter long.

GP4000s truly are great tires. I bought them because everyone on BikeForums was raving about them, and since then I've tried maybe 4 other "Race/Train" type tires. GP4000s are simply the most well balanced of them all.

I have GP 4000S front and rear on for 4000+ miles ( no flats) i also have installed "Tuffy Liners" inside both wheels and feel very strongly that their installation has made me flat free for a LONG time. Both products are terrific!

Pretty sure it's been at least 1800 mi for me. I did extract a 3 mm piece of wire completely embedded in the tire and sticking straight in towards the tube (no idea how that did NOT cause a flat) and a couple other pieces of glass. It's good to check tires every once in a while even if it's not flat.

I actually like the ride of Vittoria Rubino pros to the Conti GP4000, but I've since got to (the much clunkier feeling) but bulletproof Conti Gatorskins for training.

Age before beauty
My bike came with Vittoria Rubino Pros and I intended to change them but 1200 miles in, and no flats what so ever. So, I've kind of gotten spoiled by them. I got a new extra set of wheels and put Michelin Lithion 2's on the new wheels and got a flat the first time out. Fixed the flat only to find a split sidewall on the Michelins. I think I'll give the GP4000s a try next.

The coloured tires use a Silica in the compounding which is incompatible with the Black Chili compound. That is why Black Chili is only available for black tires.

At 225#s you want to switch to 25s?
I started this year at 304#s. I rode my Campy Eurus wheels with Vredstein tires, in 23s, of course. Their tires have a higher inflation rate.
Ive lost a good bit of weight but Ive never been as low as 225#s cycling. 240 is about where I hang out. Ive never had as much as a broken spoke on any of my wheels. I did have spokes lose tension on my crappy Mike Garcia wheels but other than that, nothing. I am the ultimate test of weight on components. I ride.. a lot. And Im not a 12 MPH rider.. I punish my stuff.
Take the weight stuff with a grain of salt and just dont ride anything that common sense says isnt going to hold you.

I too am built like a line backer, 5'10 215 lbs. The tires that came on my 2009 Specailized Roubaix Comp lasted about 1500 miles before small stones pushed through the rear. I replaced both 700x23's with Conti ultra gatorskins 700x25. The back has lasted 3300 miles and is still good enough for a backup tire. The front has been rotated to the rear and still has the ridge in the center after all those miles. I bought a new front. I know they're not GP4000's but Conti tires are known to last so if I were you I'd upgrade.

Curve ball: Anyone tried both the Michelin Krylion Carbon and the GP4000S? If so, what's your opinion of both, and why did you choose one over the other?

I am a big fan of the 4000S. I think its the best tire on the market right now. I was a huge fan of the Michelin PR2s but the PR3s leave a lot to be desired. I usually get 2000 miles or so out of a rear and I replace them when they get squared off, not when they show threads. I dont believe Ive ever had a flat on 4000s's either.
Only reason I have Vredsteins on my bike is I needed some tires quick and Performance had them on sale. My HED wheels have 4000s's on them and my Fulcrum 1s also have 4000s's on them. Great tire.
But to answer your question, I dont think anything rolls like the 4000s.

I have both. I run Krylions on my back up bike. I switched to the 4000s on my new build because at the time, Michelin was moving production and the Krylions were hard to get. I like the ride of the 4000s better but I think the Krylions wear longer and have a little better flat protection. Both are good tire for all around riding. The 4000s are more race ready in my opinion, although I don't race.
