Vacation Advice: Northern CA / Bay area

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vacation Advice: Northern CA / Bay area

I would like to spend a week in northern CA / bay area with my wife in early August, hit up some winery's as well as spend at least 4 days doing some "epic" rides. We would need to rent some nice road bikes for the week. I love riding hard, she doesn't so some variety would be nice (maybe I go climbing one day and we take a spin the next...).

If you've had a cycling-ish vacation here that you have enjoyed and feel like sharing please let me know (a PM is fine as well).

Thanks!

I did the Headlands loop road ride after crossing the GG Bridge and really enjoyed it. I also rented a MTB and did a group ride in the hills around Marin County with Fairfax Cyclery and a group road ride in Napa through Bicycle Works. The group rides were a lot of fun and really great people.

There is no shortage of rentals for easy touring around Fishermans Warf for your wife. Just watch out for the "bushman".

I recommend the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. Lots of epic climbs and some flatter rides around the coast. There are there are lots of small vineyards if you are into that.

Levi would probably recommend Sonoma, which is not as hot as Napa.

we go to the bay area every summer since I went to Cal and miss it so. You didn't ask about hotels, but I'll tell you where we stay anyway. We usually stay at Mariott city center, which is in downtown oakland and right across the street from the bart station. only 110 bucks a night with AAA discount for Thurs-Sun. I think weeknights might be a little more expensive, but it is worth it.

As for rides, check out:
Tunnel Rd>wildcat>three bears (see links)
