Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Watch rather than a handlebar computer

I need a watch for tracking mileage speed and all that, I figured instead of a computer it'd be better to be able to use it for other things other than biking. I was wondering if theres any watches out there that have gps's that will give me directions since im terrible with that. If anyone knows any please link me seeing specs for these things have me lost. Price range $150 maybe I can find something on sale.

I haven't heard of any gps watches but why not simply print a map off Google? Works great for your mileage, too.

Garmin ForeRunner 310XT is one that I've used. It's a full cycling computer, has pretty much all the same features as the Edge 500, but has multi-sport features for triathletes, or whatever.

Although, no maps. No smart-phone?

Are you planning to run and swim? If so, get the 310XT

I have a garmin 305 watch with heart rate monitor. Keeps track of everything you want including cadence if you are into that. you can also get the 205 really cheap which is the same as the 305 without the heart rate monitor and I believe it is in your budget.

I have the Garmin 305 Forerunner as well. I just strap it onto my handlebar when I am riding. I also have the sensors for cadence and wheel speed.

I have a garmin 305 Forerunner with a cadence sensor and handlebar mount.

I now have a cateye DW300 - the garmin is a pretty big hunk of electronics for the handlebar....

Smart phone, which can be iffy for a cyclo computer. I know my blackberry is not accurate enough to rely on. Sounds like a Cateye Mikey 8 (<20 dollars) would suit your needs though.

Cycling without a speedometer and odometer isn't really fun anymore. If you can't accurately brag, what's the point?

Here you go:

https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerun...0271912&sr=8-1
https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Speed-C...d_bxgy_e_img_c

And you will be all set. Plus you can get the bike mount for 12 bucks if you want as well. The only other thing I recommend with the 305 is the velcro armstraps. The one it comes with pretty much suck. You can buy this that comes with the velcro strap and the bike mount.

I'd save some $$$ and get the Garmin FR60 watch (no GPS) and the speed/cadence sensor. There is no watch unit that will give directions, so the benefit of the GPS feature is minimal (your actual speed/distance will be measured off wheel anyways... the GPS is only to review the map of your ride later).

The 305 w/cadence looks like it's the way to go, as you can use for other things, I have a 205 that I like but it stays mounted to my bike, the watch is more useful.

I can't think of anything the size of a watch that gives directions -- as long as you're talking about maps or turn-by-turn directions, that is. My new Garmin Forerunner 410 (haven't even had it for a week yet) will give a compass heading to whatever latitude-longitude destination you program into it. Not turn-by-turn, of course, but as long as you can figure out where North is, you could probably find your way.

I'll be getting a bike mount and cadence sensor for it soon. Took it on its inaugural ride yesterday and thought it was pretty cool. I'll also be using it for various other workouts, which is why I got it instead of an Edge 500 or 800.

Funny, I'm watching Team Garmin trundling to the finish of today's TdF stage...
