Lube Speeplays

I recently switched to Speedplay Zeros -- it's going well, no problem clicking in or out and I've stayed vertical (knock wood) in spite of the crummy weather and roads. I thought I read once here that you can/should lube either the pedals or the clieats or both? Is this true, and if so, what do you use? I tried a little White Lightning today after my ride and it does make clicking in and out smoother. Any suggestions?

Clean and lube the cleats with a good bike lube. White Lightning is fine. Put a bit on the spindle as well and you are good to go.

You can (should) lube Speedplay pedals with marine-grade grease. They have ports built in for grease injectors. In goes the new grease, and the dirty old stuff comes out the other side. Wipe and ride.

Lube the cleats with whatever you use on your chain.

Thanks guys, I must have skipped an entire chapter in the manual. I'll have to go look for the grease ports! Wish my LBS had said something too. Of course, it would have been great if they mounted my cleats correctly too (they were 180 degrees upside down). Always learning....

Thanks again.

That's the first I've heard of the grease ports - where are they on the Zeros? Any link to demonstrate or support this?

hmmmm. I found this online but still can't find it in the manual.

As far as I know, that just applies to Frogs.

nope. Its on the outside of the pedal. If you look at the screw on the outside of the pedal, you take that off, and put the grease injector in there, and inject some grease.

You can buy the injector at any LBS. I think the literature that came with my x-2s said grease them every 1000 miles.

The older X series came with out the little phillips screw and just a black nylon plug. It can be removed and new grease injected in. I use a drop or two of Pedros dry syn on the grooves rather than on the cleats. If you lube directly onto the cleats, they tend to pick up a lot of dirt and loose litter. I suppose a little candle or chain wax would work as well.

Don't forget to lube the beveled edge of the pedals with a dry lube (such as White Lightening). I lube the cleats and pedals of my Zeros every other ride.

I do that too, but it seems rather worthless. After about 3 unclips, all the lube seems to be gone off the cleats and bowties.
