Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glad to hear it! Let us know how your first ride goes! I don't think you'll have any regrets with the road bikes.

You don't need an aggressive posture on a road bike, go with a relaxed geometry road bike, I think you'll be happy. Also, like someone above mentioned, the hand positions alone on the road bike make it worth it.

I honestly can't think of any reason to get a hybrid. I don't know why they've gotten so popular.
I have a road bike and a hybrid. I simply prefer to run errands and go to the grocery store on my hybrid with panniers than on a road bike. I also use it when my friend with a comfort cruiser wants to go riding with us.

Watching le TDF those Pinarello's look pretty nice, until I looked up the price tag...

They still look nice. . . it's just the pricetag that doesn't But neither does the pricetag on the Venge, Evo, R5ca, C59, Centro1 SL, Oltre, King3 RS, etc., etc.

First quick ride is done. We only put on about 6 miles as it got dark quick. Like the bike. The saddle will take some getting used to... and I have a little crick in my neck from the posture, which I assume is normal for beginners?

The bike performed flawlessly. We used to average ~9.7mph on the old hybrids, and tonight we averaged 11.4mph. Not a big jump, but I expect that # to climb as our endurance builds.

You will get used to the saddle, but it might take a little bit. Also you might consider upgrading the saddle, bike manufacturers even on high end bikes often include a cheaper saddle because they know it will likely get replaced, as the saddle is a very personal thing.

As for the neck, that usually happens to me when I'm not relaxed on the bike. Try to relax your shoulders and neck and I think it will be better. Once you get used to being in a new position you'll probably relax naturally and that will subside.
