Win-Win Situation

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Win-Win Situation

I was at the end of my ride the other day and a guy in a full Garmin Transitions kit passes me and gives me the hand wave. I let him get 10-20 yards ahead then I decide to see if I can keep up with him. I push it and catch up, but stay 2-3 bike lengths back. I'm pretty sure he knows that I'm there, but I don't feel that I have to yell out that I'm following him since I'm so far back. We go up this hill for about a mile and I'm close to my limit. Near the top it gets steeper and I shift and he definitely hears it and he stands and rides away.

I got a great workout and he gets the satisfaction of dropping me. Win-Win

Nice job keeping up with a retired pro! I see a bunch of retired pros where I live wearing Livestrong jerseys and Cervelo test team jerseys. I guess retirement hasn't been easy on them as they are overweight and slow.

OP: I hear ya.

The only time I "latch on" unannounced is when I know the rider in front of me is much stronger. As they pass me and get a good 30 feet or so of separation I sometimes like to see how long I can maintain that same amount of separation. Good interval workout.

When I wear my 7-Eleven jersey I'm a retired pro.
