Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2010 Scattante R-330 54cm

Hey Guys ... there is a guy selling a 2010 Scattante R-330 (54cm) ... and I was wondering if that is the correct height for me if I am 5' 11" ... I know I should go get fitted, but I am wondering if that seems like the right height??

Also the buy wants 450 for it... looks like they had this on clearance for 499 + tax (I think)... he has riden it 200 miles (his words) and has a receipt that shows it was bought in March....

Let me know what you guys think I should do .... I really want to get a Road bike (started biking a few weeks ago, and it seems like I am going out daily... and really enjoying it... and I think I would like to get a "real" bike )

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, im a glorified 5'10"(pretty much 5'9") and i ride my 54 specialized allez with the seat higher than i think i should ride, not that it leads to imbalances or anything, i just wonder if maybe i should have bought a 56 frame. however, the 54 allows me to get lower in the drops, way more aero, and is still incredibly comfortable. the only problem i have is that my shoulders/neck get cramped after a 42 mile ride wearing a backpack woth a half gallon of water and my commuter goodies that i need day to day. however, i seem to have quite long legs(according to the fitter, and raised the saddle 1.5" after 100mi off his fitting.

Still being new i would suggest sitting the saddle higher than the bars(if you cant fit yourself to the bike somewhat). ride 10 mi, 3 in the tops, 3 in the drops, 4 on the hoods. this is how fit my ride for the first time, and after a few saddle adjustments, im VERY happy with my bike.

as far as brands and pricing i cant be much help, if its CL i'd spin him some story about how you can only afford $75 off his asking price, if the price he is asking is close to new, i'd go with $150, but the major indicator is whether this bike fits you or not! a too small screwdriver will annoy you after long usage, so will a too small bike! however, my 54 with a high saddle gives me aero gains(seems like it anyways), since being a small guy, with a high seat, and long legs makes me lean over more, im more aero. just a guess, no powertap here lol

I dont know if i stressed this enough, but FIT IS KEY! my allez was more luck than anything, my only complaints are wearing 1/2 gal water on my back so hunched over, along with the aero(going into the drops)yields little benefit with a backpack, esp. when it is firm and doesnt lay flat. i'm anticipating the day when i dont need a backpack!(i.e.camelbak ideally, or at least bottle cages)

54cm sounds a little small for 5'11" but it depends on your inseam and how aggressive you want to ride. there is a good fit calculator on competitivecyclist.com

pricewise, i don't know anything about the R-330, but 450 seems a little high if the original price was 499. since it's a Performance Bike bike i'd rather pay the extra $50 to have a new bike with lifetime adjustments and ability to swap the bike if you don't like it.

Thanks for all the updates... I emailed the guy about the bike but I dont think he is interested in coming down on the price...he may have to wait a bit and realize that this brand doesnt have a huge resale value... otherwise I can just wait....

Bike fit inseam is measured from the floor hard up against the pubic arch. It's usually 2+" longer than your pants inseam. Some people quote their pants inseam when talking about bikes. I'm a very average 5'9". Pants are 32" and bike inseam is 34". I ride 54 and 56 cm bikes. Fit is set the same for both by selection of components and proper adjustment. 54 sounds a bit on the small size for a 5'11" guy with average proportions, but depending on the bike and components, it might be OK. Look at pro cyclists' bikes. They tend to go with smaller frames with high saddles and long (~140mm) stems. Sometimes this is out of the necessity of getting the bars low enough with respect to the saddle for their aggressive (i.e. aero) riding positions.

dont rely on inseam for determining bike fit.

I am going to performance bikes after work to test out the bike.... if I can get it from them for 499... I dont see the point in giving this guy what he wants... This is all helpful info...

Plus I dont know a lot about bikes and would hate to get a bike that is damaged and I didnt know how to spot it..

Did you mention to him that the bike is $499 at Performance? Sometimes that talks sense into people, sometimes they get huffy. Either way, you have nothing to lose.

That will only work if the guy responds, he knows what I am willing to pay, if he doenst want to respond then let it be... I can get it new .. just need to find someone who has the 2010 in stock, otherwise, just wait... its at performance... if you dont like the price today... wait a bit... it will change...

Fit is primarily based on reach and top tube length. It's a lot easier to change your saddle height than your reach.

I'm 5' 10" and ride a 54 in the Scattante CFR frame and in the past have had the 54 Scattante road frame.... I was fine with the cockpit size... but I did have the seat pushed all the way back with a 120 mm stem. It really depends on how far you like to be streched out. Years ago I would ride a 56 -57 top tube .... now I preffer 54 - 54.5

Good call - $49 savings (more with tax I suppose) isn't worth not having a warranty and free basic fit and adjustment.

Buying new at Performance, you can also join their club and get 10% store credit.
This will offset the $50 increased price.
Watch for a sale (there's always one going on) and you'll probably save even more.

Huh, in my experience, Performance raises the prices of their items whenever they have a store-wide sale. With the exception of closeouts in odd sizes, I rarely see prices vary by more than about 10%.

There is no set size to have for a specific height, it is all about preference and comfort in the fit. If you like a more aggressive position a smaller frame will fit you better than a larger one and vice versa. For example I am 6ft and I test rode a Cervelo S2 in 54 and 56. You would think the 54 would be too small but I loved it over the 56. The bike just felt a lot more responsive and the more aggressive position felt really good. You really won't know what feels good to you until you try it out and get a proper fit.
