Used Tires on Ebay - Manufacture's Production date codes/age

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Used Tires on Ebay - Manufacture's Production date codes/age

There are lots of used tires on ebay. Problem is no one knows how old they are or when they were made. I've purchased some at pretty good prices to try out but some were starting to dry rot. I realize thats the risk you take when buying used tires. Is there a tire expert that knows the date codes printed on the tires?

Continental
Bontrager
Michelin
Schwalbe
Etc...

Not to rain on your parade, but buying used tires is a bad idea...buying used tires off eBay qualifies as gross bafoonery.

How much money are you actually saving by buying used tires for a bike? If money is an issue, there are $20.00 tires that work well.

Used tires?

I bought a NEW set of Michelin Pro3Race off ebay for $45, shipped (for two tires)... How much do you think they are worth on the used market...?

Make me an offer, lolol!

(I would be willing to consider "used" new-take-off tires, but they would have to be deeply discounted...)

I have lots of used tires at home. I can't seem to throw them away for some dumb reason.

I'm happy to sell them to you. I'll give you a great deal.

Donate them to your friends for trainer tires. Well, those friends that won't cough up the money for a Continental trainer tire.

I use them for trainer tires. I won't cough up the money for a trainer specific tire.

I have one that I bought a few years ago and it stays on a dedicated trainer wheel. It will never come off of it. I'm actually being serious on that part, I don't believe I will EVER be able to get it off of that wheel.

Ditto. A season of riding gives me more than enough tires for the trainer over the winter.

Buying used tires, wtf? Hopefully you don't buy used helmets as well. Sorry but there are so many deals with new tires to be found that I'd only do this out of desperation.

Used tubes wouldn't be too bad if they hold air .... at least they don't wear out ...... used chains & cassettes are another no-no.

And who sells used tires ?? Why not ride them until they're shot ? Or are they parting out stolen bikes all the way down to the tires ?

The idea was to get the better quality tires that I wouldn't normally buy. I got a $100+ set of tires for $34. Front looked new. Back worn maybe 15%. Since they don't last long, its a total ripoff paying full price.

I sell used tires all the time. Not on Ebay but on CL. Good, high quality road tires with a lot of life left. GP4000's, Pro Race 4's, Gatorskins, Armadillos - many others. Cheap too. Like $20-25 a set depending on what else the person is buying. I give away good usable tires that aren't really worth selling. I once sold 76 tires to one guy...34 sets and a bunch of singles for $375. All of them were in good to excellent condition.

WhyTF would anyone buy used tires??? my safety is just worth more than saving a dollar on a tire that could blow out on a 45 mph downhill. F that. Look on Bonktown even, but if you're just bent on buying used tires, I'll sell ya some I was going to throw out. They're crap. I'll tell ya that up front. I wouldn' t ride 'em , and you shouldn't either, but i'll sell 'em to ya. At least you will know for sure what you're buying. On ebay you will have NO clue, possibly until its too late.

I've flipped over a 100 bikes in the past 18 months. Survival.

Not everyone who rides a bike is looking for the newest or the best. What they're really looking for are deals.

Its usually pretty obvious if a tire has a defect. Dry rubber cracking is harmless as long as there isn't a bulge. You could strip all the rubber off the sidewalls and leave the thread casing exposed and it would be fine.

Tires are part of my list of items I will not buy used. Maybe if I personally knew the person... maybe.
