carmageddon2011: bicyclists race jet airplane across Los Angeles

Has coddling tendencies.
The distance they have to cover on city streets is 40 miles. If the riders follow traffic laws, which their race rules state they will, then the advantage is with the jet. Once in the air, it's gonna be a 10 minute flight at best for the aircraft (someone with grammar school math skills more refined than mine can do the math). Then without a luggage stop, it's just a quick taxi ride to the harbor park finish line for the jet passengers. That's assuming the jet riders will play fair and won't delay their Long Beach airport departure.

hey Kidd, do you get to the Marriott last night? Conway was talking about how the police were patroling the road to keep people off, but how empty the highway was even before the closing..........

A realistic race would be from door to door including mucking with the TSA, the normal flight delays, etc. In such a race, there'd be an excellent chance of the cyclists finishing before the plane got off the ground.

Sure, but ground logistics should make the result a foregone conclusion. Traffic was supposed to be bad today due to the closure, but it sounds like that was a bust.

P.S. The cops are saying any more bicyclists caught on the freeway will be arrested. Half a dozen have already been "escorted off" with a warning.

Yeah, I just read the result. Bikes won by a long shot. Used the LA river trail. Hardly city streets. And I heard them interviewed on the radio just now. Cool.

Also, the flight is actually more in the 30 minute range, and that's the plane leaving the terminal, taxiing, waiting for takeoff, flight time, landing, taxiing, to passengers exiting the plane.

From another news article:
JetBlue called for a re-match.
"The cyclists rolled all over us this time," said Sebastian White, spokesman for the airline. "Out of fairness, we'd like to propose a best of three. How about LAX (in Los Angeles) to JFK (in New York) next time?"

Writer of the Slate article said: "In the face of this fanciful idea (a traffic-busting flight!) it became possible to demonstrate that cycling, often taken as a non-serious or marginal or even annoying (to some drivers) form of transportation in the U.S., could seem eminently reasonable: Not only the cheapest form of transportation, not merely the one with the smallest carbon footprint, not only the one most beneficial to the health of its user, but the fastest."
Cheapest? Those guys on the Wolfpack Hustle A team were riding carbon wonderbikes. We all know it would have only been possible to average nearly 25 mph on such pricey bikes, right?
Actually, one of them was on a vintage steel.
