carmageddon2011: bicyclists race jet airplane across Los Angeles

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm betting on the bicyclists.

Y'know, IMO this "Carmageddon" thing is getting blown out of proportion.

Still, this seems like a very entertaining challenge.

Too cool. All this weekend I'll be staying near the epicenter of the disaster zone - the 101/405 intersection. My own plans are to cycle up Sepulveda at some point and get some shots of the bridge demolition, if possible. I'll get a bird's eye view of the catastrophic congestion as Sepulveda is one of the alternative routes. My guess is I won't be alone riding my bike. I suspect many will turn it into a circus of sorts.

Will people be able to ride the "closed" highway?

Please post the pix. Should be entertaining.

Oh, and if you don't get to do it, don't worry. We'll go through this all again next year!

I bet some will try and risk a ticket. Downhill either direction on a bike would be awesome. The locals are treating it like a holiday - parties planned, events, possible protests...

I have to go to Port Hueneme for my drill weekend with the Navy. I'm driving there, and plan to ride back Sunday since PCH is an alternate route. Then I'll ride back to base Monday and get my car. PITA, but good training I guess.

I have friends going on a 'party ride', and the plan is to try to get onto the freeway. My buddy has been hounding me to join them. I'm too old for such shenanigans!

I bet the cops will have all freeway access points locked down tight.

I would bet they'll have the on-ramps locked down tight. Wonder how well they'll be watching the off-ramps! Maybe have to go the wrong way on the freeway. Besides, I'm sure there are some who will want to do this bad enough that they'll scale a fence or two.

Say you find a way onto the freeway up top, then you fly down toward the 101. If you know that intersection, you know it's a jumble of this that and the other in terms of exit possibilities, many at ground level. Hop over a barrier...

Is it worse than any of the Santa Monica mountain roads we fly down?

Good point. I suppose it would be fun to ride the 405 just to say you did it.

pics would be cool. I'll be listening on KFI radio with Tim Conway, Jr. He's doing a live remote and "street party" from there.... should be a hoot!!

It really sounds like it's going to be a huge street party!!

I'll be listening to TimmyTime all night. First up, walking dogs with portable radio. Then maybe a drive over to the Marriot.

Me too. The news coverage I listened to this afternoon said that they were fast riders. Then I read this on Rahsaan Bahati's twitter feed: The Bahati Foundation will have riders racing the jet blue plane tomorrow. @flightvsbike @ohaijoe @ezrahorne @latimes @wolfpackhustle.

Seems a private donor has upped the ante and will donate $2500 in the name of the 1st rider who beats the plane to a charity of their choice.

Love it!

Edit: @flightvsbike should read #flightvsbike

It seems the original 5 riders racing the plane are Wolfpack Hustle riders. Bet on the bikes!
