How many gears is average and gear range question.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you can spin out a 50 front 12 rear for any distance on the flat you should be riding competitively.

Having said that I do find a 50/12 spins out a bit too soon on downhills. But you don't really need anything higher, it's just fun to be able to make the bike go faster at 30+ mph.

I don’t know about other people, but I max about 42/13 on flats doing 120+ RPM. I have a 12t cog, but I don’t really use it. I have triple chain rings, but I never use the small one as 42/26 is plenty low for me on hills. I do use the big ring on long descents, but that’s about it. I’ve done my highest gear 52/12 downhill, but it gets pretty scary. It doesn’t need to be any higher.
