I wouldn't choose to extend a ride on dodgy tyres - I've seen (and heard!) too many tubes bulge through split tyres and explode. I would turn round and ride back slowly.
I was out on a group ride recently when one of the riders badly split his tyre. We had to leave him and ride 2 hours back to the van, then it was an hour's round trip to pick him up. There were 15 of us and not one of us had a spare tyre. I think I might start carrying one on long rides in future; probably an old one that is almost worn out, but would be okay to finish a ride on.

I reckon your problems started there!

Thursday we decided to do a gentle fat burn ride to escort a few new riders who wouldn't handle the heat as well. One of them doesn't know what a red light or "Stopping!" means and all 270 or so pounds ran right over the top of me. So much for ever riding with noobs again.

Got another f'ing flat today on the maiden voyage of my new tires. Huge thorn stuck right in to the side of the rear tire. Tire pressure held until I pulled the thorn out, then...psssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Yep. That thorn was a good 1/2 inch long. Came out in one sharp piece. Tried to break it in half but it wouldn't break. That thing would have punctured a car tire. Reminded me of when a shark attacks a surfboard and leaves behind some teeth. That thing was nasty.

Man, if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all. Bet it was another beautiful day at the beach, too! Sorry to hear about it!

C02, mini pump, spare tube, tire boot, patch kit, mini tool, and the odds are very good you can overcome any mechanical issue.

Good for The Big Bend Mountains.
I was transporting the wheel to be overhauled to my mechanics house.
