Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Noob Road Bike Advice

Hello all,

I am just getting into road biking after many happy kms on a cruiser bike. I am looking at getting my first entry level road bike, and would really appreciate some help.

I am not aiming at getting into racing at any stage, just looking for more transport, exercise and the occasional shop ride. Through my research so far and my budget restrictions I am looking at one of 4 options:
Giant Defy 3 2012
Trek 1.2 2011
Malvern Star Oppy A3 (Australian bike) 2011
Schwinn Le Tour Sport 2011

I am looking for bikes with a slightly more upright riding position than the full on racers, and would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.

Get the least expensive one, because you can tune up everything else on your list.

If it were me:

1. trek
2. Schwinn (but either the fit, price, or bike shop would have to be better than trek)
3. Giant or Malvern (cheaper/lower grade components than above 2)

Thanks for the advice. After riding both looks like I'll be getting the Trek from my amazingly helpful LBS. Can't believe how light it was over the Schwinn.
