Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes you could feel that way, but you would be wrong!

If I don't buy cycling stuff...I would still be slow
That's not an issue.

hmmm - I'm trying to figure out where the dopamine rush comes from. Is the the search? The find? The purchase? The arrival if mail order? The install on the bike? The actual usage? Do you find you need to spend more and more to get the same hit?
I have some stuff I bought but did not yet install.

Replacing broken stuff doesn't count. That's not discresionary. (I need a new frame pump - mine finally broke (POS) and I can toss it and get a good one!)

I don't think I have a problem.
I'm in the middle of building three bikes and this week I've bought a wheelset, two freewheels, brake cables, tires, tubes, headset and a bag to hold the spare tubular. Haven't bought the tubulars yet, need to save up.

Then there's two more frames hanging from the ceiling but that's another story.

Another story is my attempt to save up for a new carbon fiber bike.

buying something new keeps me motivated. if I dont have anything new for a while, I start to not be AS excited to get out on the road. If I have something new, i want to get out and try it out.

the pure joy of riding should keep one motivated enough. one doesnt need all the bells and whistles to love cycling. why bother getting new wheels, cockpits, or clothes when you can get that huge endorphin rush after a nice, hard ride?

Well, the way I look at it is....whatever keeps ya in the saddle longer, go for it.

your absolutely right though, since I am addicted to buying things for my bike which helps me stay motivated on a daily basis to ride, I'm probably not as much as a cyclist as you are.

I hear that! I was recently in a bike crash last month in a century ride and it caused several hundred to fix. my rear wheel was scratched but not damaged to the point of unridable. I wanted new wheels prior to this, now I feel like I NEED them. I mean, For all I know there could be something damaged internally that I just cant see and may fall short as I'm descending at 50mph and cause me to crash head first into a tree which would leave my wife alone with 2 kids and all the bills to cover. I would say a new wheelset is the safest option in this case, wouldnt you agree**********? Lol

I know I am. I hate this sport because this is the only hobby where I invested too much into. I could go on vacation almost 3-4 times this year but its all spent on equipment. Oh well, I guess I wasnt alone.

Its all about the family. Anything short of a new wheelset would be selfish on your part. Think about the wife and kids. For their sake it would be a wise move to get the wheels and the peace of mind it will give you

hahahaha thanks. I felt a little selfish at first about wanting new wheels, but its really nice to know that others see my point of view which validates it would in fact be selfish of me NOT to......

Just ordered wheels. I will let my wife know that Mike F, a SENIOR member from San Diego supported my decision! lol

I think it may be a healthy thing for us cyclists. you know, like fighting every once in a while in a marraige can be healthy.

I buy them in my mind. Then I go out and ride. I wish I could afford to throw money around, but I've actually been really good with craigslist for only necessities to keep the bikes going
