New roadie advice - Ti maybe, under 4k

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New roadie advice - Ti maybe, under 4k

Hey folks, I'm shopping for a new roadie and looking for some input.
Probably try to keep it under $4000 (this can bend, but I can't get out of my orbit).
I'm thinking Ti and I would prefer to have USA-made frame. I'm kind of an old-school (read stubborn) brain so very likely will stick with metal over carbon.
E.g. Litespeed Xicon is one consideration. Any other suggestions here? Thanks!

Lynnskey is certainly in your price range.

Serotta and Seven - might be tight but worth the look.

I have two Ti road bikes...a Lynskey R330 and a Dean El Vado. The Lynskey is my preferred, but the Dean is a nice bike also.

If I were buying another Ti frame, I'd watch eBay. In fact, I do. Have saved searches for both Dean and Lynskey. Significant discounts compared to brand new. Ti won't wear out, so buying used is fine with me. I sorta wish I had bought a used Lynskey. A new one is expensive, but a used one would've ridden just the same.

Definetly Lynnskey. Also Moots. If you have a body build that's not average, go custom with Seven

Lynskey cooper. I think Lynskey has a special deal going on now for a complete bike with 105 or Rival for $2500?

Take the leftover from your budget and get a nice set of carbon wheels.

I would upgrade to the Lynskey R230 over the cooper for the butted tubing and curved seat stays. It is a little lighter and very responsive. I built mine with SRAM Force for right at $4000.
Lynskey makes a great frame and the customer service is fantastic.

There are threads on BF about American Bicycle Group getting slippery about frame warranties. The BBB has a number of complaints logged. For that reason I would stay away from Litespeed.

I have a older Litespeed and have had no problems. But people buy Ti frames for the long haul and want to know the manufacturer stands behind their product. If my frame fails I have accepted the real possibility a customer service bobblehead will tell me to get stuffed.

I believe Lynskey was started by the original Litespeed owners when Litespeed was all the rage. I would look at their products. Desalvo looks good too - give them a look.

Take your time and do your research.

Good Luck

Wow, I didn't know Litespeed was getting some bad rap on quality. I am considering the Moots as well as Eriksen, one reason is they're built in Steamboat, Colo, just a few hours from my house (I like the idea of running into the guy who built my bike at a bar). I'll keep checking this thread, see if any other Litespeed comments come in or other recommendations. A lot of Lynskey fans out there, it seems. Thanks guys!!!!

I got a hybrid Ti/Carbon with rear carbon stay and fork. It is an Eclipse frame made in Germany (new ones are made in Taiwan) now.

Carbon gives it that extra compliance I think, perhaps you could go for something like that?

You should certainly make a trip to Steamboat and visit Kent Eriksen. We went up there a couple of weeks ago and ended up spending the whole day talking bikes with Kent and his wife. Great folks. Never even made it up the street to the Moots shop.

Wasn't Kent Eriksen "The Man" over at Moots before venturing out on his own (kinda like Lynskey was at Litespeed)?

Oh, and yes, I own a 2001 Litespeed Classic that I'm still very happy with.

Yes, Kent Eriksen started Moots. He sold it but kept on building his own frames. Sounds like he maintains a good relationship with Moots still. He seems to prefer the straight gauge tubes that he builds his bike with over the double butted tubes that Moots uses. He does about 170 frames a year. He does the fittings and he has one guy who does all the welding. He has two other guys who do other stuff and his wife runs the office. Very small outfit.

His prices run $3100 for the frame. I am planning on getting one within the next year. I expect it will last me the rest of my life.

No, it's not cheap. But when I hand him the money he uses it to buy his ti tubes, and pay his guys and himself, etc. No middle man. Moots you can visit their shop but you have to buy through a dealer (LBS).

Habanero, are these for real? Such a cheap price. Looks too good to be true, and you know what they say....
