First Black Guy at the Tour?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any Eastern Asians been in the tour before? Someone get those Keirin racers on a road bike!
There have been quite a few Japanese and Chinese riders for various teams in the past. i know a couple were on RadioShack and Bbox telecom (Which is known as Europcar now, the same team who sponsors Johann Gène)

The 41 is a funny place. Most times and most threads bring a smile to my face.

This thread, no so much!

There's some racist comments in this thread ("genetically stronger?"--gimme a break), but not the OP's. It's a valid observation/question--for reasons more related to cultural bias than anything else.

2 moderators have spent some time cleaning this up and I'll say the other guy is nicer than I. I would have hammered a few people for a few of these, now deleted, posts.

Let me be clear. A thread that seriously discusses competitive cycling becoming more popular with different groups that are not usually seen in the sport is legit. Posts that make stupid (not satirical, not ironic, not comedic) but outright stupid comments about stolen bikes, superior genetics and whatnot are racist. If you don't understand why they are racist then I've identified your problem for you.

You really think that a comment about riding a stolen bike in the Tour de France isn't so absurd that it could only be taken as a parody?

Meh. This is the 41, I guess...

true...I just don't see another way to say it. I just think it's a bad topic then if people are afraid to say something and fear the word "racist". Fact is, we are all different races and yes there are differences, in that same breath...there are similarities. The world of P.C. talk is just dumb.

Nobody is taking about PC or unable to recognize parody (I suggest people use words they truly understand). "Jokes" that a black person is riding a stolen bike up a hill can only be construed as racist even if the person posting this can't grasp that.

Blowing off chastisement by implying that "the 41" is different is silly. Try posting those comments in any other subforum here or at RBR or Bicycling or wherever and see what happens. Jesus wept.

If you have something to add that is on the topic of the op please do. Otherwise quit whining.

Parody or not, it is immediately trumped by the fact it's insulting and injurious to a whole group of people. I say let's get back on topic and leave the idiocy.

Why not help 'em out?
Project Rwanda is getting the people there on bikes in general: https://www.plus3network.com/cause/17
Team Rwanda is their actual national team: https://www.plus3network.com/cause/33

I'd do it, but I'm already logging there for Bikes Belong.

I'm not blowing it off, points taken, and understood. maybe my view on it is different and the things I say may come out and sound racist when those arent the intentions. If anybody was offended...sorry.

genetics do matter. to say that a people of a certain origin have a genetic propensity for something is hardly racist.

The way Jensen and Shockley framed the genetic propensity theory, it was indeed.

I can see that the topic of racism has indeed overrun the thread, as it's now devolved into an argument as to what racism is. As a result, the thread is closed.
