Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Return to cycling

After 15 years away from the sport, I'm back. I walked away all those years ago largely because I was a hopeless bike addict. Couldn't ride enough and neglected petty much everything else.
I ordered a CDale Supersix three weeks ago and it arrived last week. Since it's arrival, I've ridden 240 miles, and my legs are already shaven. Goddamn, it's good to be back.

I did a similar thing but it was a Synapse after 18 years and I'm riding 1/2 as much. Agree it does feel good to be back, I had forgotten how much I liked to ride.

My legs are not shaved, but I have such little hair on them it doesn't really matter. I do remember being in college and shaving in the communal showers in the dorm...and getting some strange looks

Great to hear this. I had to take a 8 year lay off, back surgery. I started out on a hybrid 2 years ago and now looking for a new road bike. It just feels good to be able to move again.

It sounds like your legs are re-aclimating better than mine; after being away from serious riding for some 22 years, I am struggling to get back up to over 15 miles at a whack... my muscles don't seem to be repairing and building as quickly as they did when I was 27 :-(

I laid off originally because of knee joint issues (chondromalacia) - I lost track of how many times I tried to re-start, only to be subjected to the pain and popping for days at a time. I seem to have found a medium for now, and have been working the appropriate muscles with leg-lifts, but as indicated, it is slow going - I am holding off purchasing a new bike until I am certain the body is going to go along with the plan...

Thanks!

I guess I'm just lucky, my cadence came right back and my legs almost immediately felt comfortable with the motion. Muscle memory, I suppose. It also helps that I've maintained a pretty high level of fitness over the years through running and swimming.

Bikes: 2014 Boardman SLS 9.4 Di2, 2011 CAAD 10 4

It's great being back on a bike, isn't it? I hadn't been on a bike since the late '80s, and I was so sick of being inside at the gym every day that I decided to go buy a bike. I got a CAAD 10 and have around 800 happy miles on it to date.

I had also stayed fairly fit at the gym, so I was able to get back up to speed fairly quickly. I'm keeping up on the local A rides, and feeling the need for speed.
