Phone mount?

I have been looking for a decent multi purpose phone mount that I could use on my bike and motorcycle. So far the only ones I have found are those "squeeze from the side" (or top) models. I just don't trust that is going to actually hold my (too expensive to replace) phone.
I have an Evo Shift, and it just seems like all the mounts I find worth a hoot are made for other things. I would like to mount my phone to use the GPS/mapmyride app, as well as to put some music on. I already have this neat little solar charger that works well out on the road.....anyway, can someone link me to something they have used on cycle that holds the phone confidently?

bonz50 07-29-11 10:49 AM

wedge pack. ;)

Juan Foote 07-29-11 10:56 AM

Is there some specific product they make I should be looking at?
I already have an underseat pack. I was thinking more of something I can actually see.

naw - forget about the phone. stick it in the wedge pack and take it out during breaks. look at the scenery instead.

I'm looking for one for my DroidX. I'm thinking of "modding" a holster thing that I have. I'd just buy a second one. It's very tough. I'd worry more about the road shock or sweat damaging the phone rather than dropping the thing.

Pocket in the back of your Jersey 4tw. I turn on iMapMyRide, put it in my pocket and forget about it. When I get home I take it out, turn off my ride... done.

What scares me more is the idea that you want to do this on your motorcycle. As if idiots in cars texting isn't bad enough.

Juan Foote 07-29-11 02:12 PM

Have you never used a GPS?
Really? What do you think I am just going to be riding down the road texting and surfing?

I am just looking for a good mount for my phone. All commentary aside, if you have a good suggestion for a mount or brand of mount you have used, please let me know. Otherwise, if it is just an opinion about how I should ride my bike, well....

Yes. I look at the map before I leave, and if I happen to get lost along the way, I pull over and stop, look at my phone, figure out where I need to be vs where I am, and then I go back on my merry way.

Frankly, this thing with the GPS drives me crazy. I've got a friend who occasionally takes me to the airport - it's 10 minutes away and he's been there probably 50 times. Still, every time I get in the damn car he's got the GPS destination set to the airport. Like you suddenly forgot how to pay attention to where you were going and wouldn't know to turn until the robot lady tells you too?

Any second you are even looking at the phone means you do not have your eye on the road, the car in front of your, your rearview mirrors, or anywhere else your paranoid head on a swivel is supposed to be pointed. In 4 wheel vehicles this is dangerous. On 2 wheels, it's careless.

I use a clip like this:

http://cdn-store.androidcentral.com/...87/large/2.jpg

This one for the EVO I found At this online retailer for example.

And use a hook and loop (Velcro) cable tie on my stem to hold my small flip phone. It's handy and I can hear it if I get a call. Sometimes I'm out playing hooky while I'm riding and I don't like to miss an important call. Before I get called out for this I don't answer the phone if it isn't safe.

I have used one similar to that for my old BB. It was made for it and fit very well and secure. The ones I am finding are more of a "one fits all" kind of mount that they "say" is for my particular phone. The only one I have found specific to mine was the three tab type, much like this one you linked, but without even the spring clamp that one has.

That looks like a Seido holster. Be aware that the phone screen faces in when it's in there, not out.

I bought a universal mount on Amazon.com for around $12. Has a swivel mount and is adaptable for about any width phone. I use a Casio Commando with Sportypal Pro, Mytracks, and Mapmyride (data junkie).

I was looking at something similar to this for my Epic. Im worried about it getting damaged if I crash. I have a catete strada and keep my phone in my jersey pocket for now.Sprint is going to phase out my phone in October. I have a EPP so maybe Ill kill it then and get a phone with a more reliable operating system (Froyo update has ruined it). Samsung + Sprint + Android = Epic fail. Sorry about the rant. Had to go through hoops to get the GPS to work after the crappy update.

Lol, you aren't bothering me. Especially not griping about Sprint. I recently had it out with them over this new "premium data charge" on top of my supposed unlimited data plan. False adversizing sucks.

Yep.... Kinda like the 4g charge for non-existent 4g in San Diego they promised in December. Class action suit nationwide by everybody with 4g phones and no 4g service, so sprint changed it to a premium data charge :)

There's your answer. Unless you're a transplant patient waiting for a liver, it'll do you good to be out of touch for awhile.

I was searching online for a phone mount on ebay and I found one that sits flush on your stem. It's a very simplistic design and it looks like it's held by 2 big elastics (well, it's not your grocery vegetable elastics). It looks more secure than the bulky ones I see like this:

...I can't find it anymore though :/ FML.

If I was using my phone for Nav I would get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-S.../dp/B001RTOSRY

RAM makes the handlebar brackets for bikes and they make a motorcycle mount as well.

The above case would keep the phone dry in the rain as well. Personally, I have a garmin 800 i use for nav and bike stats and keep the iphone in a sandwich baggy in my jersey pocket.

craftygeek 08-03-11 11:43 PM

I use one of these:
Waterproof phone mount

I use with Runkeeper to record my rides, but also so I can see my pre-planned route on screen. The only issue I had with it was that the mount goes up to 30mm & not 31.8mm - so I had to get a bar extension like this as well:
Carbon bar extension

I wish people would stop posting don't use a satnav, look at the scenery or you'll run into the back of a car type comments....we don't all live in well sign posted towns/cities. I live out in the countryside & ride on single track roads that i've never been on before with no traffic that generally have at best, poor signposting - more commonly none. Pre-planning my route in runkeeper ALLOWS me to look at the countryside, it doesn't prevent it.

AlexZ 08-03-11 11:56 PM

You don't need a phone mount......Nobody needs one! Stick that piece of crap in your pocket and stop annoying everyone around you!

Rob13 08-04-11 12:33 AM

Check this one out.

Juan Foote 08-04-11 01:13 AM

Like that case, shame it is for an iPhone.

I don't see what all the hate is for either. IMO having the GPS go to your next checkpoint, etc is a whole lot easier than keeping tabs on a sheet of paper, etc. If you choose not to ride with one that's cool but there is no reason to hate on someone just for using the tools available to them.

AlexZ 08-04-11 01:25 AM

Nothing against GPS whatsoever! It's the damn phone part that's the problem...in the car , on the bike, while walking - or is it stumbling , in the store, in the theater! In the bank! I am SO ready to shove one of those up someone's......Sorry, got carried away.....

Yes. Don't be that guy riding along yakking on a cell phone or worse, texting while riding. The Greenway is dangerous enough already.
