Clothing gear question?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clothing gear question?

If you are new to cycling and you have to buy only one item, what would you buy?
Jersey
Bibs
Cycling short
Cycling short liner

Q. Is there any advantage of wearing Cycling short liner and regular shorts VS cycling short?

Q. One silly question, do people wear underwear (like mesh compression sold by champion or UA) beneath cycling shorts or it just increase more temperature down there?

Bib shorts and nothing should ever be worn underneath them.

I guess you're talking about those regular shorts that also have a liner that have padding in them? Seems silly to me, you're going to end up sitting on all that lumpy fabric and it will be uncomfortable.

I would go with the bibs.

Cycling shorts vs Triathlon Shorts:

Is there any difference between those? I heard Tri-shorts have less padding? Someone told me buy Triathlon shorts as it does NOT has feeling of diaper which is is the case with regular cycling shorts? Any opinions?

Less padding and I believe faster drying. If you're just getting into it and think that 25 miles is a long ride, you probably won't notice the difference. When you start spending 5+ hours in the saddle, you start to get really picky about which shorts and saddle are under you... and you don't worry about diaper insecurities.

Are you in a triathlon? If not, you don't need triathlon shorts. And no shorts feel like a diaper unless they're WAY too loose.

Buy tri shorts if you're planning on running and swimming in them. How much are you riding?

If you're riding in the 60-100 miles per week range, then cheap shorts are fine. If you're riding more, get good ones.

Performance Bike Ultra II bibs are about $90 and pretty good for the price. Frequently on sale. I think I got a pair for around $70.

Just get cycling shorts and don't wear underwear underneath them, otherwise your loins will hate you (extremely chaffed).
