Oakley...Anything cheaper?
I always wear polarized sunglasses whether I am walking, running, driving or playing golf.
I have been looking at various sunglasses and keep going back to the Oakley Jawbone. Any recommendations from the members on a good pair of sunglasses at a reasonable price? Or are the Oakley the best bang for the buck? |
I got Tifosi's cause with all the money I spend on swag I cant afford Oakley's. Are Oakley's considered swag?
|
SWAG = Stuff We All Get. no it's not swag.
|
On this board you'll get suggestions for Oakley or Tifosi.
Tifosi are photocromatic (get darker as it gets brighter). They're about $60. All the bike shops aroud me sell them. |
I just destroyed a pair of $2 Dollar Store sunglasses. I will replace them with another pair of $2 Dollar Store sunglasses
Seriously, they keep the sun out of your eye. That's all they need to do. Buy what you think is nice |
I expect my sunglasses to work as safety glasses when I ride as well as when I am training with firearms. Oakley lenses surpass all ballistics standards. I chose the Oakley Flak Jacket based on this as well as their optic quality and aesthetics.
My wife only uses cheap gas station sunglasses. She has about five pair lying around and has probably spent about as much as I did on my Oakleys. I have tried to buy her nicer sunglasses, but she says she will just lose them. Go whichever way makes you feel comfortable or find a nice middle-ground. |
i have some called Calipers by Ryder , nice for the price http://www.ryderseyewear.com/node/146

I think Smith sunglasses are a good value. For the price of a pair of Oakleys, Smith will often include one or two additional sets of lenses.
Disclaimer: I work at a store that sells Smith. However, they're all I've used for riding since 2004, even when I wasn't working for Smith retailers. |
I bought these at a sport chalet on sale for $119, and they came with a dark lens, an orange lens (for overcast right?), and a clear lens. The online ad says it only comes with one extra lens though.
|
you could argue that oakleys are probably the farthest from bang for the buck based on the fact your paying a large part for the brand name. BUT with that cost comes the look and "Status". Oakley has a look, finish and quality that I find difficult to compare. I have had several different brands in my everyday, cycling, golf...etc. and nothing comes close for ME. I always find myself coming back to the oakleys. I have the oakley Radars for cycling and I love them. they cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth it because I got the fit and quality along with the look I was wanting as well. BUT, I'm VERY vain and care a great deal about what I'm wearing. I couldn't wear $2 glasses EVER....I mean EVER, but that's me.
|
One more thing...regular, polarized or photochromic lens?
|
I wear the Giro filter. They come with dark and amber lenses that are extremely easy to replace. I think I paid $140 for them. Maybe check into those.
|
Got my 2nd Serfas for $60. Only thing is mine comes with brownish lenses, and not grey/black ones (sold separately). I've come to like the more yellow sunshine tint, though.
Some can be photochromatic, polarized, or both. |
i like oakley shades. i recently picked up a pair of smith pivlock v90s. theyve been good so far. Just as nice as oakleys.
|
Oakleys are comfortable, durable, stylish, have amazing optics, and offer great eye protection. Unless you absolutely can't afford them there's no reason not to own them.

+2 for the Oakleys.
Get the VR28 black iridium polarized lenses, BEST lenses I have ever used. |

Oakley lenses surpass all ballistics standards. http://www.mcrsafety.com/index.php/g...safety_glasses These cost around $1.50 a pair at any construction or industrial supply vendor, and come in about 10 different lens coatings and shades. Polarized, no.. but they're a buck. To the OP, check out a supply store, you'd be suprised how many different styles you can pick up a pair of rated safety glasses in. And most are in the $4-6 range. Fashionable? At that price, not really. This is the pair I usually wear, in a different color.. Priced at about $6/pr. http://www.mcrsafety.com/index.php/g...safetyglassses |
Tifosi, Smith optics, Bolle, etc. There are plenty of other choices than Oakley.
|
I have two pairs of Oakley's 1. Radar Range for riding and Split jacket for everything else both have the red polarized lens. I have owned other lens and the optics on the oakley's are just superior......I have tried the safety glasses but if you look thorugh both side bye side the oakley optics to me seem much clearere and well defined. You can reduce your cost by purchasing your glasses on ebay just be patient and make sure the seller has a good history of authentic oakley's. I saved almost 50% on both of my glasses by doing that.

Smith Pivlocks are great. The Pivlock v90 Max are pretty awesome for big coverage:

Meijers carries a nice pair called Style Science that are polarized and have the blue light blocking that I really like. On sale for $20 they are great, I still have my original blue blockers that are maybe a bit better, but getting a bit worn.

Meh, I wear a pair of 1980s ski glasses I found in my boot bag when I started cycling a couple years ago. They look awesome in a daggy 80's ski glasses kinda way - huge, reflective, plastic - and they work great.
Really, any decent glasses - from the gas station or the sport store or the Sunglass Hut - are fine. Who gives a s**t whether they are any brand name or not. Good quality polarized glasses are cheap. That said, I wear Oakley's for my regular sunglasses because they make really damn good glasses. Buy them if you can afford them and like them enough. |
