Generic to brand-name frame matching.
 

Is there a list somewhere of what common (BD and similar companies) generic overseas frame models match to the brand-name bikes they are knock-offs of?

I'm particularly interested in the Specialized Roubaix, which I think I saw in generic form somewhere with the Zertz inserts. But also I would have thought that there are people informed enough to match up frame specs and say "Aha! That's the same as a XYZ PedalHarder!". Any list or website?

Does it matter which brand you get a quality control reject from?

I could be wrong....but I highly doubt you will find a "generic" Specialized carbon frame. The reason is that Merida makes frames for Specialized and Merida also owns a hunk of Specialized. Since they have an exclusive market, why would they sell the same stuff for less and risk a lawsuit? But I've seen dumber stuff than that in the bike business.

And they are "Zertz" inserts.

Interesting how Specialized sells, for around five grand a bike with a frame that's below the S-Works. Most of the other companies sell their top frame/bike for about that price. You can get an EVO with Red for about the same price. I can do a 6.9SSL for about six grand.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that somwhere in China someone is making a frame that looks from the outside like a Specialized Roubaix that they can sell on Ebay, etc.. I also wouldn't doubt for a second that there are plenty of suckers in this world that will buy it. Then they will hope that they got the exact same frame with all the same pieces of carbon, layed up in the exact same fashion that Specialized designered and enginered for optimal performance and then are willing to stand behind from a warranty and liability standpoint.

Thanks, I knew "Zerk" was wrong and tried to google it up quickly to correct, but ended up hitting other misspellings. Fixed.

Again, though - I was also interested in the general case. If factories are making frames out of old molds, or selling unmarked frames out the back door, etc. - I'd think there are people here who are knowledgable and interested enough to ID them. From the responses here, that seems to not be the case. :shrug: I've been wrong before, just a little surprised.

Because the market for multi-thousand dollar frames is a lot smaller than the market for $500-$1000 frames.

So if they can get an extra couple of thousand dollars for little more than a decal, they will.

And how many people could truly tell the difference from the way it rides?
