Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano RS 10 or Handbuilt Ambrosio FCS28/Ultegra Wheelset?

Hello everyone, im new and sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I've just bought a Genesis Equilibrium 20 and I am seriously considering swapping the wheels out for some 32 hole FCS28's built onto Ultegra hubs with butted DT swiss spokes. Probably radial at the front and non drive and 3 cross drive side.

I havent physically got the bike yet so haven't ridden it and was hoping to do the swap straight away if at all to retain the value of the wheels.

Opinions? If it's any help Im 6ft and weigh 220lbs, but I dont have much fat.

Thanks!

The FCS28/Ultegra wheels will be heavier and probably less aero than the RS10 wheels, but they should be much more durable. I would not do radial lacing on 32 hole hubs and there is no reason to use radial lacing on the NDS of that rear hub. cross-3 front and rear will work best with those.

The wheelset sounds good, but why the radial lacing? (Because you want to is an excellent reason - they're your wheels!) The norm for these hubs is 3X all around. Radial lacing - so I'm told - makes the ride vertically stiffer, which goes against part of the reason for 32 spoke wheels.

ETA: Listen to valleycyclist, he does wheels for a living. I'm just another guy on a bike.

Thanks for the replies, the radial lacing is an aesthetic thing. The total weight saving might be 20 grams across the pair max. so im not bothered about that. The FCS28's would be heavier by about 150 grams but i dont really care about that, it's the durability - Ill be doing 36 miles a day in an English winter.

3 x would probably be a safer option...
