Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shaving or not?

Hi guys,

Im a guy who every now and then have saddle sore problems..

Initially I changed immediatly bib shorts pants to a better class (castelli X2 padding) they feel very comfortable.. by the way i weigh about 65kg..

I changed my seat to Fizik Antares and also use Assos chamois cream..

I wash pants every time and remove them immediatly after every ride... Rides are about 100km - 130km (take anout 4.5hrs)

A think I have noticed is that I am sweating a lot down there... maybe also due to warm temperatures here in malta.. around 35deg...

Could also be the issue that I might need to shave down there, but Im afraid of getting in growns! What do you suggest guys? I would really appreciate any suggestions as by end of month Im willing to go passo dello stelvio and dolomiti for about 10 days...

Thanks a lot for your time

Well shaving your legs is not a problem as shaving your butt etc etc.. shaving legs makes it easier also to apply creams or to recover from injury... I shave legs every week..

Shaving butt and part where sit bones touch with saddle is more critical. Im afraid of getting in-grown hair and thus cannot get on saddle...

Just do it. Shave it all, even better would be to wax it all!

If you asking and didn't just start with a hell no, it means you secretly want to!

Ps. I'm growing it back in for now, I was told I was prickly.

I don't get this....like literally...I ride and ride...I've even not washed my shorts once (out of town). Arse is fine. I'd say I'm a normal hairy maybe a tad more but I'm not going to shave my ads. That's one disco away from singing RENT tunes on a regular basis

Dont be gay...there's nothing ****phobic about my statement...I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, just saying shaving your ass is pointless unless it's for looks...so who's looking?

You're more likely to experience more discomfort if you did shave it.

You need to get a saddle that fits. shave anything you want, it wont help if your saddle doesnt fit.

I agree that it might be of a dicomfort, but with chafing and friction hair may be detached and thus also cause a problem.. which ever way you take I think there is always consequences... Yet dont know what it's bettet...

Thanks for the feedback guys

I hate wading into this topic and for some reason it rears its ugly head far too frequently. When I was racing many moons ago, my coach was dead set against shaving any contact points with the bike. The reasoning was that hair actually prevents chafing and shaving irritates the skin. Proper hygene will more than offset any moisture and bacteria hair may hang on to. Take it for what it is worth. Nuff Said!

At my age most of the hair has decided to vacate premises on it's own. My calves are softer and smoother than my wife's and she resents that...........

Wife loves the shaved legs. Makes for more "play time." It also makes me really freakin' fast on a bike. Like, super fast.

My wife was dead set against it, I did it anyway, she still says she doesn't really like it but she can't keep her hands off my legs. Win.

Just saying, when you break it down...there is no sport men participate in that as many effeminate characteristics as cycling. From the fashion torture of roadies shoes to stroking of those STI hoods to the buffount helmet , it's a queen parade. Just saying.
