1st group ride, and how it went.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1st group ride, and how it went.

Hi, I'm an 18 yr. old cyclist and have been cycling "seriously" for about 2 months. Went for my first local group ride today. Upon arrival my experianced partner and I quickly realized there was a smaller group than normal, (probably due to the heat). To make matters a bit "worse" everybody there was a A team qualifier. They had very nice bikes and were very fit. We both knew I wouldn't last long but we rolled with em anyway. About 5 miles in things were peachy and i was amazed how much faster I could travel in a group. I was able to hold on the wheel of the guy in front of me and life was good. Then my back tire flatted. My buddy helped me change it and although the group continued on we were back on the road after about 6-8 min. When we arrived at the would-be rendevous they hadn't waited and we continued on our duo. It was a very pleasant ride and we ended with iced coffee. I had a lot of fun regardless of the flat tire and am looking forward to my next group ride next week.

P.S. Sorry for the Wall-O-Text!

Yes, yes I am. I raise pastured poultry, which is essentially moving meat chickens, (broilers) in a floorless pen everyday to a new spot of fresh green grass. We then butcher them after 8 weeks on the farm and then sell them frozen to local residents. It's a beautiful thing really.

Curious how they left you behind. Did you exchange some parting words or did they just....forget about you?
My first (and only) group ride with about 8-10 others I had a rear flat as well but everyone stopped and one even gave me his tube (forgot what happened to mine). I got back up after a few min and we continued on.
I stopped looking for group rides because I just don't like talking while riding. And riding next to that rather hot lady (the group rotated so we rode next to each person) who didn't say a thing was just awkward - though I made the mistake of keep waiting for her to start first )

What heat? High today in Rogue River, OR is 86 degrees. It's 103 where I live and it been that way for over a month, with a month and a half of this kind of heat to go.

I'll bet your humidity wasn't above 20% either.

It will be 86 here today -- at 4 am!

Some "B" or "C" group rides will stop and wait for flats. You may find the "A" group picks up the pace after a few warmup miles, and they tend to be very fast on hill climbs.
