Can she be saved?

I was curious how damaged can a carbon frame be before it is too damaged to be repaired. I happened into a frame that has a chipped area and a small hairline crack on the chain stay. you can only see it when you push in on the stays. Is this fixable? if so who do you suggest.

I work with someone who had a root canal and saved a tooth he was sure he'd need to have pulled. The guy was certain. So who knows.

In theory, they could probably saw off the chain stay and build a new one to attach. It's probably fixable without doing all that, but the real question is what it'll cost. You don't have a photo of the damage, by any chance? I doubt anyone in here can get you a quote, but it'll at least be interesting to look at. :D

No personal experience, but I've heard nothing but good about http://www.calfeedesign.com/ Calfee.

See this thread. This guy just had his chainstay repaired and is impressed so far (he hasn't gotten it back yet...but there are pictures).

I did my own CF repair after I shipped my bike and the cogset gnawed into my downtube. I didn't have any cracks and it wasn't in as structurally significant area as a chainstay...so I am *NOT* recommending you do it yourself. Here's my thread.

I remember that thread, and how crazy you must be to do a century around Tahoe on that bike. :D

Yes, mine was a seat stay. But I know most cf can be repaired. Call Kurt at carbinframerepair.com. Email him pictures and see what he says. He did an awesome job on my frame.

Called them. I have to send a pic to her by email, but she said just guessing no more than 300.00. That's music to my ears.

Carbon in general maybe is the more repairable material, even more than steel, were if you have a crack or a dent sometimes you have to just go an change the whole tube, but with carbon from what I have seen is just go and apply reforcement patches and the bike is ready to go. I'm not tellig you to do this but u can buy a kit with instructions and even fix the crack yourself if its small. Call calfee tho...

Well thanks to all of you for your help. I haven't got a reply from all the leads yet, but it looks to be around 250.00. So that's good news.

Let us know how it turns out.

If you haven't called Kurt yet, give him a call carbonframerepair.com.
