Bike Shops in DC Area

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Shops in DC Area

Hey everyone, I'm going to be in the DC area this week and I want to check out some east coast bike shops. Any recommendations? Also, does anyone know somewhere where I could rent a quality bike to get around town on? Thanks!

Bike Doctor which is east of DC is great; Race Pace is north, and Spokes has a couple locations in VA to the west and south.

Cycle Life is a really good shop in Georgetown, and they have a big selection of super-high end stuff.

Georgetown area, u have like 3 good shops in there, expensive for my taste. Then u have to cross the K-bridge to arlington.va. There u have Conte's (changed its name now) and two more that are pretty good.

Here's links to 4 pretty good shops:

Bicycle Pro Shop
Spokes, Etc.
CycleLife
Revolution Cycles

There are also the usual Performance Bike locations sprinkled around D.C.

A-1 Cycling is excellent, but a little further out in VA., Herndon and Manassas to be specific. Not high end, but solid, knowledgable bike people.

Conte's in Arlington. Best bike shop I've ever been to. Pinarello, Wilier, Cervelo, Specialized, Cannondale, and more. They will work with you to get the components you want on a bike that normally comes with other components, so long as they are in the same price range.

A-1 in Herndon sucks. Small shop with a small selection. One guy is cool to talk to, but they definitely cater to the husband and wife going in to buy a pair of $700 hybrids.

Lots of Performance stores in the area, but unless you want a GT, Fuji, or Scattante, I wouldn't bother.

There are a few high-end shops in the Georgetown area that carry Colnago, Look, Time, etc. I haven't visited them, but I've seen the bikes through the window when the store was closed.

Big Wheel Bikes is not my favorite shop compared to Conte's (now called Freshbikes) or Capitol Hill Bikes, mostly due to BWB's small selection. BWB does rent bikes in a variety of set ups (road, hybrid, tri/TT, etc).

If you got to A-1 Manassas, ask for Ben. He's the guy with the out-of-control mutton chops and crazy appetite. Definitely not a road pro shop though - more BMX and MTB there.

If You Want Knowledgable Service, Friendliness, and General Help...

A small shop in Arlington,VA: Papillon Cycles on Columbia Pike.

They aren't for high-end gear. They don't carry many brands (maybe just Giant). But what they offer head and shoulders above all of the rest is friendly, patient, competent repairs, advice, restoration guidance, and riding know-how. They're simply the best.

Probably not what the OP is looking for in the DC area, but if he's in the Arlington area, Papillon is worth stopping by to chat, at least.

Contes when I can get over there. Otherwise Spokes in Alexandria as they offer a nice military discount.

Contes/Freshbikes (Arlington and Bethesda) sells Cervelo, Pinarello, Wilier, Kuota, Canondale, etc. Arlington store has best selection of bikes and gear. Cyclelife (Georgetown) sells Colnago, Look, Specialized (and Assos bibs and jerseys); they also do Retul fittings. Bicycle Pro Shop (Georgetown and Arlington) sells Colnago, De Rosa, Time, etc. Spokes (4 VA locations) sells Trek, Specialized, Serotta, Surly, etc. Revolution (Georgetown, Rockville) sells Trek, Orbea. Proteus (College Park) sells Orbea, Jamis, Bianchi. The Bicycle Place (Silver Spring) sells Seven, Trek. City Bikes (Adams Morgan and Chevy Chase) sells Specialized, Surly, Jamis, Moots. College Park Bikes (College Park) sells vintage Italian bikes, etc. IMO, best shops are Contes/Freshbikes, Cyclelife, and Bicycle Prop Shop. Stay away from Big Wheel Bikes (just my $0.02).

Thanks everyone, I visited Contes (now freshbikes) and I think that it is the best shop that I have ever been to. Picked up a couple HTC jerseys for my brother and me and a pair of HTC bibs. All HTC gear was 40% off, how could I resist? Also picked up some red GP4000s for my bike back home. Definitely want to see that shop again!
